I had posted a story a month or so ago about a lil girl here who needed 50K for eye surgery. Inmates at Angola had raised like 10K for her. Well last week the Female Prison here got together and raised 13K and she is now going to get the surgery.
I dont know if any of you helped out but ill update when she returns....the surgery is in China.
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) Remember the mom working tirelessly to raise money for her daughters surgery to see? Teosha Moore needed $50,000 to make it happen, but she knew it would take more than her own hands. Now another group of unlikely donors offered theirs. Together they seem to have helped heal each other.
"I never thought I was going to make it, and it's just right on time, right when we needed it," said Teosha Moore.
Four-year-old Trinity Schley needs surgery to see. She was born with a rare condition that left her blind, but a ground-breaking umbilical cord stem-cell surgery could restore her vision. It's only available in China and costs about $50,000. It's why this family called for angels.
"A lot of us are in here for hurting people's lives or taking lives, so this was an opportunity to possibly give someone a life back," said Shanda Crain.
Shanda Crain is serving a life sentence at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women on a murder charge.
"I hurt a lot of people. I left my children at 5, 7 and 8. They're now 21, 23 and 24 years old," said Crain.
She never got to show her own children the kind of love and support she says they deserved. Helping Trinity, Crain says helps her heal.
"In order to make a difference in a child's life it's almost like you are just making a difference in your own child's life," said Crain.
Hundreds of female inmates answered Trinity's call for help. Together they donated more than $13,000 toward her surgery. Trinity now has enough to travel all the way to China and get the stem cell injections she needs.
Her mom Teosha says she never would have guessed these women could reach through the confines of corrections, and change their lives.
The look on their faces shows Trinity changed theirs.
Inmates raised the money by holding various fund-raisers within the prison. Trinity leaves for China late next month for surgery. She and her mother will be there for a month. They promise to send pictures and keep us updated.
