I think the only time you need a card is if your travelling in a train, bus, or car.

Most places these days you can pick up FREE WIFI, and more and more locations are doing the same everyday.

You will regret it you still need both, heres why, I have been on the Verizon wireless plan for almost 4 years now, this last year they changed the rules in USAGE.

you can only use a specific amount of data download. Once that is reached, you will be charged 20 cents a kilabyte. anyway, my point,

Verizon, and Im sure at&t, decided that they didnt want everyone using their laptops for 10 hours a day.

You will receive a bill one moth and it will be for 800.00 for overages!

to put it in context, if you watch 2-3 full length high def movies on your laptops verizon card (this you can do in a day or 2) you would of reached your limit for the month.

again, this limit magically was imposed just a year ago, it used to be use as much as you want.

Like Ttaer said if u use it for watching movies or downloading large files it will go over the limit and it is VERY expensive after that.
However i use mine sometimes all day long. I only surf and play poker maybe listen to a radio show i cant p/u in my truck. I bring it in at night and download updates, programs, etc while hooked up to my home wifi. Ive never come close to going over, you get 5GB a month from Verizon. Just remember a modern movie can be close to 5GB all by itself. But for surfing and emailing its the bomb....

Yes, I have the Virgin Mobile Pay as you Go....NO CONTRACTS !!

I have had it for about 4 months, and only needed a total of $40
Because I haven't needed it that much.
If you use Verizon or AT&T, it would have cost me $40 a month or more...

Like Fish said, you can find Wireless almost everywhere.
But I have come across a lot of places that Either Don't have it or You need to Pay for it.

I think he's talking about Just using a Broadband card as his Everyday use.
Not sure if that's a good idea...

Wireless is sometimes funny, and you could get Knocked off Many Times during the Day or Night.
Even my Wireless at Home, I get knocked off...it's only for a few mins...but it's a Pain in the @ss.

I have to agree with these guys. I just bought the Verizon Aircard this past week because I thought it would be functional as I am on the road alot and with my laptop. The first two days I used 1.7 gigs. No downloads. Guy from verizon said I had 30 days to try it and I would just pay for the usage for the month at $59.99. I fully intend to return it sometime this week. If it was unlimited it would be great I would totally stay on board. The service has been great. Because it is limited to 5 gigs I have to get rid of it. Back to comcast.

quick question: can you watch 'streaming live tv' over the internet with the wifi? Does it have enough speed? Just curious.

So if I'm streaming sports, downloading music, watching flash movies and playing OL poker, chess and stuff like that ALL day then its doesn't sound practical to have this for my only service?

Not my plan thats for sure...If there are some unlimited usuage plans then maybe so. Its not as fast as my cable connection but way faster than dial up. In the very deep backwoods of Northern Mississippi last month i couldnt connect for a few miles, other than that ive had a connection anywhere at anytime. .But i wouldnt use it as my main home access its just to limiting..

Alright ,thanks so much guys for the info.I'll have to see who has the best unlimited plan.I'll probably be kicking it around for the next couple of months so I'll probably need to be mobile most of the time.Just out of curiosity PPP,since you said that yours works most everywhere, what provider do you have?

So If I just play poker all day and surf the web I should be ok on one of those smaller plans?

Yes,

Ive only gone over once, my girlfriend was staying with me for 2 weeks, and she played poker 12 hours a day, checking emails for 2-3 weeks straight.

thats alot of time on a laptop,

I was just barely over then.

just get a card for an "as needed" basis if that is what you need..If you travel like me almost every hotel has wireless and I am sure you have a Crackberry so you would only need for no signal areas..You get my drift. I have wireless at home and in all of my offices. It is great and no worries of overages etc...
