FOXBORO -- In a bombshell of a move that comes one day after roster cuts, the Patriots have traded Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders for a 2011 first-round draft pick.

Seymour, 29, has been a stalwart on the Patriots’ defensive line and in the lockerroom since he was drafted in the first round – sixth overall -- out of the University of Georgia in 2001. He was one of the feature players in the team’s run to three Super Bowl titles this decade.
“From nearly the day he arrived in 2001, Richard Seymour established himself as one of our premier players for nearly a decade,” said Patriots coach Bill Belichick in a statement. “His presence has been felt as a force on the field, a respected man off it and a multi-year champion.

Any transaction we make is with the goal of what is best for our team and, as difficult as it is to part ways with a player of Richard’s stature, many factors were taken into account when we considered this trade,” Belichick continued. “As an organization, we feel the trade with Oakland brings sufficient value and is in the long-term interest of the club. We are extremely grateful for the huge impact Richard’s elite level of performance had on our success and we wish him the very best during the rest of his career.”

Seymour was named All-Pro three times and also made five Pro Bowl squads. The 6-foot-6, 310-pounder had 52 tackles and eight sacks a year ago, playing in 15 of the team’s 16 games. Just the year before, he had only played nine games.

In all, Seymour totaled 460 tackles, including 256 solo stops, with 39 sacks. His 39 sacks rank 10th in franchise history
Seymour was in the final year of his contract, and, with Vince Wilfork in a similar situation, it was not guaranteed that the team would have extended it.

Wow, he must be hating life right now. Btw, why do teams still do trades with the pats? Do they not realize they get screwed every time?

Robbery, a high 1st rounder for the most over rated Pat on the team.

You are mostly correct but not everytime. Kansas City made out pretty good with the Cassel trade.

Pats know what they are doing...

Patriots know they were not going to be in a position to resign Seymour next year so they move him now for top dollar in what could be a high value draft pick in 2 years plus open up almost $9.79 in cap room which should go a long way towards settling the Vince Wolfolk situation.

There is a lot of speculation as to what 1st round picks will be worth in two years, if The NFL imposes the proposed rookies only salary cap by 2011 then that pick is worth it's weight in gold. Pats rolling dice here on the rookie cap happening.

On the field repercussions.

The Pats are deep in the D. Line anyway with starters Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork, veteran reserves Jarvis Green and Mike Wright, along with 2nd round pick Ron Brace (potential All Pro) and 6th round pick Myron Pryor all available to play this year. The team is solid as anywhere along D Line even without Seymour.

The key to making the move a real success is resolving the Wolfolk situation, which now appears eminent, given the extra cap space...

Hurts their defense this year. They're gonna have a huge turnover on that side of the ball after losing Bruschi, Seymour, Vrable, and Harrison in the last couple years. We'll see if they have the young guys to step up.

The NFL needs to investigate. This is the third trade between the two team that side heavily in favor of the Pats. My guess is that Kraft is providing the Raiders with cash under the table and Al Davis is helping out the most hated team to say a big FU to the NFL. We all know the Pats are cheats, it isn't going out on much of a limb to say that they have found a new way to break the rules.

I think the Pats will need to put up a bunch of points this year to win. I don't think the defense can hold its part of the bargain.

I totally think this is collusion between the Raiders and Pats. First the Randy Moss trade. Then the Pats decide to go with more of an emphasis on a 4-3 defense this year. Raiders trade away Burgess who's a good 4-3 end for practically nothing, and now this. It's [FILTH]ing unbelievable. How can the Raiders not notice they keep getting rear-ended in these trades with the Pats? They keep doing it because there's definitely something weird going on. Possibly Al Davis is helping out the Pats because of his hatred for the Steelers? Sounds crazy but he is crazy.

It is a strange move for the Raiders.

Seymour probably has only 1 or 2 more dominant years left.

Maybe the Raiders feel they can make a move this year.

I disagree.. the defense is much stronger than it was last season. Much more depth at linebacker and got rid of Vrabel and Bruschi, who despite being great Pats were clearly a step slower at this point in their careers. The biggest problem on their defense was the secondary, which will be vastly improved with Bodden, Springs, Butler, and Chung coming aboard and Meriweather has gotten better each season. Seymour is still a great player, but he was disposable at this point in his career.. they still have Warren, Wilfork, etc, and brought in Ron Brace and Myron Prior who have impressed a lot, and lets not forget acquired a Pro Bowler in Burgess as well.

IMO at least this defense will be solid, and in two years when Seymour is on the decline and the Patriots have a top 5 draft pick it will look like a huge steal.

Plus I see Brady in a very dirty uniform all year.

I can't decide. But midman2161's post (#13) seems to be spot on. And I am no Pats fan.

The Pats are moving to get younger as they have stated and everything seems to be all systems go for that plan.

Raiders are loading up. They know the AFC West is weak this year.
