okay folks, i know many of us in the 35+ crowd often wonder what the hell has happened to traditional rock n roll and the music scene in general.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
those in our camp cannot figure out for the life of us how what passes for music today can be compared to what we know to be real good music. It seems to us that today’s generation is much more impressed with computer generated electronic sounds than actual singing or playing of instruments.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, led Zepplin, the doors, the Beatles, jimi Hendrix.... I could go on and on..... Where are these types today? we sometimes ask.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
While it may be true that in 2009 this "genre" of music is rarely heard of in the media, rarely wins awards, and pretty much never cracks the top 40. I am here to assure you that it is not DEAD.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
If you don’t believe me simply tune into your XM RADIO channel 56 or SIRIUS RADIO channel 17 and listen to the station 'JAM ON' for a few days.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
THIS IS FAR AND AWAY THE BEST RADIO STATIO FOR MUSIC I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
moe<o:p></o:p>
widespread panic<o:p></o:p>
phish<o:p></o:p>
government mule<o:p></o:p>
Dave Mathews<o:p></o:p>
Umphrey Mcgee<o:p></o:p>
String Cheese incident<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Many of these bands are not millionaires, but rather play for the love of the music. They are not "gangstas" they don’t feel the need to be front page of the media every day, they don’t have massive senses of entitlement, they simply love the music!<o:p></o:p>

in louisville we have lost most of the rock stations, we still have 2 that use the term "Classic Rock", but even one of them has started mixing 80's hair metal bands in the format.

The Fox ( Foxrocks.com) is the only so-called rock station left that plays rock from the 70's til today.

recently WLRS, which was the only channel that played mainly 90's till today and local bands , switched to some talk radio format.

now another channel that has been hits from the 80's and 90's , basically songs that you would remember seeing videos of when MTV was MTV. You go from hearing REM to John Cougar to Men At Work to Madonna to Devo to The Go-Go's to Van Halen to Prince to , well you get the point. But now it is supposed to switch to a Gen-X station, basically mix that same format in with Grunge hits and Punk rock and hair metal. Basically they are claiming they are trying to mix all genres of music hits that Gen-Xer's remember.

anyone that thinks r-n-r is or ever was dead is just plain lazy...being a musician myself, it always gets me agitated at people that bring up the subject of rock being dead...rock comes in many different forms...to each his own, i get that..but go out and see some live music....talk to people about what is out there...i've jammed and played some shows with a few of those bands u mentioned sportsavant...those guys are all pretty much d.i.y.'ers....all grassroots stuff..word of mouth if u will(sans dave mathews n phish)....but that's how they got goin too...there is no record industry anymore...greed and the internet killed that...along with no nurturing and promotion fer bands to get by on...a great band like pink floyd, today...u would never hear about them....and that's sad.....mike stipe said about 10-12 years ago....in 10 years the best bands in the world will be playing in their basements and garages and no one will ever hear them...talk about profound and desperately sad all in the same breath....

I hear ya Cocktails.
I was a jazz / rock trombonist, it was my passion.
Too bad there is no demand for a jazz trombonist.

Here's a live clip from the greatest 'bar' bands that ever was.
