I know we have some Florida residents here so I thought I would ask. 2 buddies and I are planning to go to Florida for the winter (january to march or april). We are going down to work on out golf games. We are looking at either the orlando area or the port st. lucie area. Wondering what would be the best type of place to rent or stay. We are just looking for a pretty decent place to stay. Also if anyone knows of any couses that offer a 3-4 month membership. Thanks for any input.

When I moved here in fall of 1997, I had Big Plans to respark my hacking golf game and become a scratch amateur.

Twelve years later and my next trip to the links will be my first in Florida since Jan 1982.

SO....Not to boff off your question, but this is one where I think you could find a wide range of options (3-4 month memberships and/or discounts for repeated play among a range of courses) online.

As for your first question, I would vote Port St Lucie. You would be on the Atlantic Ocean and if you wanted to hit any courses (or other destinations in Orlando area) you're only about an hour southeast. Plus you won't have to deal with the relentless crunch of traffic in and around Orlando.

I personally love the area where I live for golf. About 1 hour west of Orlando..The courses are so much different than south Florida there are hills, etc). If you want to pitch a tent at the beach stay on the ocean side but if you want to play golf and not pay ASTRONIMICAL greens fees stay on the west side of Orlando. You would be equi-distant to Tampa and Orlando..Greens fees are $25-$40 during season around this area and the golf is awesome. You won't come remotely close to that in South Florida during season..

One of my favs..

And if you make a swing through Ocala I can hook you up for nothing on 3-4 courses (with me of course haha)

also J- Port St Lucie was one of the hardest hit areas in the state with the real estate downturn. Many developments and golf courses were left half way finished and many courses closed. I really think you would enjoy North/Central Florida for the golf and you could always swing down to Tampa see Fish and hit Innisbrook or one of the coolest courses in the southeast if you can find a way to get on (ask anyone who has played and they will tell you best course in Florida)

Also a killer course(s) around this area as well (Brooksville)

Good advice. I live on the east side of Tampa, so I am a bit partial to this side of the state. The problem is you are coming "in season" where everything like places to stay and greens fees are higher. Kinz is right--the area he is discussing is a little more "rural", but there are bargains to be had. I go to the east coast quite a bit (will be there tomorrow, in fact), but I don't see the value over there that there is here.

Like Barman, I don't play down here near as much as I thought I would moving here.
