Great D's can score. The year the Ravens won the SB, they went a month without scoring a TD.

Back in the 70's I think it was, San Diego had a killer offense. Unfortunaltely they would always end up losing something like 42-38.

D. If I was GM of a shit team that needs to rebuild, I'd always start with the D.

A higher number of points than my opponent at the end of the game. What is it with these 'Children's Polls?'

There is a reason they say ..... " Defense wins championships! "

And that reason is because people are stupid. In pro team sports, scoring and preventing the other guys from scoring are virtually equal. Football is unique in that a good defense can improve scoring and a good offense can prevent the other guys from scoring (or a bad offense can make it harder to stop the other team). But I think the quarterback play is the one thing that most seperates the effectiveness

Interceptions are caused more by a stupid decision by the QB or a lucky tip, rather than a great play by the defensive back. The one thing that can change fumble rates the most is a QBs ability to read the pass rush

If I were a GM or owner, I would always much rather get better in the area the team is deficient in.

It depends....

I'd take a #1 D and a #32 O over a #1 O and a #32 D

But:

I'd take a #1 O and a #15 D over a #1 D and a #15 O

I know the correct answer is defense.

But I am all about that offense. 1999 Rams style, name the score!

Defence. A great defence, a la the Giants of the 80's, is a great offence (points scored off turnovers and stops).

Are you using #1 to refer to points, total yards or efficiency. All are very different. Being number one in total yards (the way some peope rank them) often does not mean number one in helping you win games

Points Tom......

Yards can be completely meaningless. My Broncos were #2 in yards LY but #16 in ppg.

16th in points scored, 30th in points allowed and still 8-8. The worst offense to be 8-8 was Washington, and they needed the 6th best defense. That is pretty good evidence that improving your offense is better than most people here think it is. . .

(and of course points scored and allowed still isn't a perfect measure of how much each side of the ball did to help the team win. . . )

Like you said somewhere else..Football is unique in that one helps the other....

Put me down in the camp that somewhat agrees that while a good defense can win "A" championship.....a good offense can build a dynasty.
