NEW YORK (Reuters) - Comedian David Letterman said on Monday his wife has been "horribly hurt" by revelations of his sexual affairs exposed in an extortion plot against him and he apologized to staff of his popular late-night talk show.
The host of "Late Show with David Letterman" said in the taping of his Monday show that he will try to patch things up with Regina, whom he married in March after dating for more than 20 years. The two have a 5-year-old son, Harry.
"She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it," Letterman told audiences, according to a statement from his company, Worldwide Pants.
"And at that point, there's only two things that can happen: either you're going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you're going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me."
He said he was "terribly sorry that I put the staff in that position. Inadvertently, I just wasn't thinking ahead ... my thanks to the staff for, once again, putting up with something stupid I've gotten myself involved in."
On Thursday, Letterman told audiences he had been victimized in an extortion plot by a man who threatened to write a screenplay or book about "all the terrible stuff" Letterman had done. The talk show host then admitted to having had sexual affairs with women employed by his show.
One day later, Robert "Joe" Halderman, a producer for CBS news program "48 Hours," was indicted on a charge of grand larceny for seeking $2 million in hush money from Letterman. Halderman faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
On Monday, Halderman's attorney Gerald Shargel took to U.S. morning talk shows to proclaim his client's innocence and say that Letterman's version of the story was only one side.
"David Letterman didn't give his (Halderman's) side of the story, David Letterman gave what he wanted the public to know," Shargel said on NBC's "Today" show.
"He wanted to get out ahead of the story, and that's exactly what he did," Shargel said of Letterman.
Shargel said it was unlikely that Halderman would have sought to extort Letterman by taking a $2 million check, because that is not how extortionists normally operate.
He declined to detail what may be his client's defense, but added that the veteran journalist has reported on crime stories for years. "He knows all about cops and wiretaps. And to suggest that he was trapped in an extortion plot is preposterous," the attorney said.
Shargel said he looked forward to questioning Letterman on the witness stand.
Court documents show Halderman owed an ex-wife $6,800 a month in child and spousal support, and authorities have said he is deep in debt.

Hillary could have cared less.

Hillary knew what she was doing by marrying the slick one, she used him to get where she is today, even before she said I do, she couldn't care less if Bill fvcked interns, screwed lightbulbs, or plowed mules.
As long as Bill kept her on her political path, didn't matter to her who he slept with.

Me personally, I think that making a public apology to her is not the smartest thing to do if you are serious about keeping the marriage going.
That's why, I agree...all he's worried about is money.

Extremely doubtful. I'm willing to bet he had her sign a prenuptial agreement that stacks up to a couple inches or more.

Perky "Late Show" staffer Stephanie Birkitt wrote David Letterman "trashy" love letters that will embarrass them both when they become public, sources said Tuesday.

"It's her musings about them," a source who perused Birkitt's purple prose told the Daily News. "It's trash."

Birkitt's letters - none of which was mailed - are steamy, but far from kinky.

"We're not talking crazy sexual escapades," the source said.

Still, they leave no doubt Birkitt was more than just Letterman's "Girl Friday" on the show.

"It's clear she's having a sexual relationship with Letterman," another source familiar with the probe told The News.

Birkitt's angry ex-boyfriend, Robert (Joe) Halderman, delivered at least one of her "Dear Dave" letters to the philandering funnyman as part of what prosecutors call a $2 million shakedown plot.

Halderman, who has been suspended from his producer's job at "48 Hours," is charged with threatening to ruin Letterman's reputation by revealing that he slept with staffers.

Birkitt moved into Halderman's house in Norwalk, Conn., four years ago, after his bitter April 2004 divorce from the mother of his two kids.

It was not clear when Birkitt wrote the letters. Halderman began to suspect his girlfriend was sleeping with her boss at the end of 2007, the sources said.

Halderman, 51, grew more suspicious the next year when Letterman, who also lives in Connecticut, began driving out of his way to drop Birkitt off after some shows, the sources said.

The accused blackmailer's worst fears were confirmed at the end of last year when he found Birkitt's letters - and demanded to know if she was sleeping with Letterman, sources said.

Birkitt, 34, soon moved out.

Halderman had little to say when reporters confronted him yesterday outside his house.

"I know you have a job to do. I might as well make it easy on you guys," he said.

When they asked Halderman how he was holding up, he replied, "It's a beautiful day ... I have some errands to run."

Then he split.

Letterman steered clear of the painful subject at the taping of Tuesday's show, although he joked that he could use an understudy and introduced a man wearing sunglasses who looked a bit like him.

"There are quite a variety of reasons of why I might need one," he said.

A day earlier, Letterman apologized on the "Late Show" to his wife, Regina Lasko, and to his female staffers, for dragging them into the swirling sex scandal.

Letterman, 62, also announced he was desperately trying to save his marriage. "Let me tell you folks: I've got my work cut out for me," he said.

It was Letterman's first taping of the show since he revealed that he had been targeted by a blackmailer - and admitted bedding female underling.

It's not like he's a politician, he tells jokes and has inane banter with Celebs. He's very good at what he does.

He handled it brilliantly by beating the press to the story, he apologized and stayed on message. He must have a very good publicist.

I'm hearing Birkitt doesn't want a law suit or anything, it's the ex-boyfriend who's suing and shit.
