An elderly golfer trying to retrieve a ball from a pond at a South Carolina golf course was attacked by an alligator that bit off his forearm, WCSC reports.
The 75-year-old Ohio man was recovering in a hospital.

WCSC says wildlife officials who were called to the Ocean Creek Golf Course, located on Fripp Island, killed the 10-foot-long alligator and retrieved the severed arm for doctors.

I think the key to why this happened is "The 75-year-old Ohio man" being from the midwest (and pretty elderly) he probably was not used to 10 ft. reptiles hidden in the course water hazards.

Us geezers seem to make bad decisions concerning golf balls.

Many years ago I was shanghaied to make a forth for some Texas Tech VIP's. (I was a "B team" golf player in the wrong place. Anyway I was driving the cart with J.T. King, ex football coach and current athletic director at the time.

He hits a horrendous slice that crossed the Amarillo highway. Yep, he goes after it ($1.25 pro shop price), Jake was not too spry and there was a doubt in my mind that he would make it but he did.

Damn ball hit the asphalt twice on its way across so it was not going to be a clean little one owner when he found it.
