I'm guessing that once your body senses alcohol that it goes into the same numbing mode that you are in when drunk and this helps any pain, although temporary. It's like when you take your first sip of beer sometimes you will experience a moment of dizziness almost like being drunk, even since it's such a small amount of alcohol that you actually drink.

However, I have a link that speaks to this topic:

Hair of the dog: An alcoholic chaser reputed to relieve a hangover, usually needed the morning after imbibing too much alcohol. There is no scientific evidence as to the efficacy of this time-honored treatment for a hangover. The saying originated in the belief that a cure for hydrophobia (rabies) or any disease contracted from a dog bite consisted of taking a hair of the dog that bit you and placing it in the wound.

It just gives people an excuse to drink first thing in the morning.

Actually the feeling of being hungover is mostly caused by dehydration. The best remedy for it is to drink as much water as possible before you go to bed after a night of heavy drinking.

dead on. i drink a lot of water, and hangovers are rare for me, although they still happen from time to time. like today, i'll drink water until 2 or 3, after which i'll start in on the beer. i do my best to avoid taking tylenol and whatnot because of the acetomenaphine factor, so avoiding those really bad headaches is important to me. :toast:

as far as driving 30 miles, i live in a dry town. the nearest liqour store is 15 miles away, making that round trip takes about 30 minutes to 6 days, depending on traffic in this congested little town.

I found a new trick to avoiding the hangover. After at least 12 hours of drinking the past couple of weekends, I found that if you can just stay up all night until at least 8am, and then maybe take a cat nap...you are golden!

If i'm not able to do that though, pop a couple of advil with an alka seltzer and that works like a charm as well.
