Can Titans run the table? Chris Johnson's vow of 10 wins not so crazy now
It was easy to dismiss Titans RB Chris Johnson when he said after the team's first win of the season that Tennessee could win 10 straight games and still make the playoffs at 10-6.
Now, with the Titans have won four straight games behind QB Vince Young after a 20-17 in Houston on Monday, must the Titans be considered at least outside contenders for a playoff berth? They did win 10 straight games last year.
ESPN analyst Steve Young cautioned on Monday night not to lose sight of the giant obstacles facing the Titans. First, there are the six losses they opened the season with. But their competition for the AFC's two wild-card berths is stiff also.
"Look at the AFC, who we're taling about," Young said. "We're talking about Pittsburgh ... there's just so much distance. You'd have to have everyone fall flat on their face. They could end up 8-8, 9-7, but really there's no way you could get to 10-6. It's what you're going to need (for a playoff spot) in the AFC this year."
Even 10 wins might not be enough, as the Patriots missed the playoffs last year with an 11-5 record. But the Titans trail six teams with better records, including the Steelers, Broncos and Ravens, in the race for the playoffs.
They have a believe in ESPN analyst Matt Millen, however. He said Johnson's vow for the Titans to run the table is very reachable. "Nothing is impossile in this league anymore," Millen said.
"They're playing good defense. They've gotten healthy on defense, and they've got a good rush too."
On the Titans schedule are the Cardinals, a trip to Indianapolis, a three-game homestand against the Rams, Dolphins and Chargers (on Christmas Day), and the season finale in Seattle. -- Sean Leahy

Well with a great rushing offense, a historically strong defensive strategy and a great FG kicker, can't help but wonder if we might have the 1994 San Diego Chargers

Though the Bolts were crushed in the Super Bowl, they won 14 games in a row after starting the season 0-4

An RxForum Friend in Vegas just bought me a $20 future at Venetian for Titans SuperBowl at 400x1

Can't be any more silly than SheBar buying $20 on the Florida Pick6 Lotto, eh?

Lotta room for hedging if they can beat Zona at Home this week and a couple more AFC teams drop to six or seven losses.

Titans' magic extends streak

Comeback with 2:37 left will rank in franchise history

NASHVILLE — With the ball sitting on the 1-yard line and Vince Young standing in the end zone, the odds of covering 99 yards in a little over two minutes were stacked against the Titans.
Putting together enough plays to cover 99 yards is a rare feat in the NFL, and even fewer transpire with the clock clicking down. This, however, was the impasse standing in front of the Titans in the final 2:37 of Sunday's game with the Arizona Cardinals.
Trailing 17-13 and forced to go the length of LP Field after a Cardinals' punt was downed at the 1, the Titans, with a composed and controlled quarterback, began a march that will rank among the greatest in franchise history.
With an unlikely cast of Titans making one astounding play after another, the Titans briskly covered 89 of those yards, but were faced with a fourth-and-goal from the 10 with six seconds remaining.
A Titans timeout, followed by a Cardinals timeout, only added to a climactic finish that permanently etched Young's place in Titans' lore.
Standing in the pocket, Young found rookie receiver Kenny Britt in the back of the end zone, and a perfect pass was matched by a perfect catch with no time remaining. The memorable 20-17 win was the Titans' fifth straight after an 0-6 start. Sunday's win can only be matched by the famous Music City Miracle.
"We have had some finishes around here, but I can't remember one like that," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. "Just a tremendous finish. Two good football teams battling it, (and) we didn't think the way the game was going early that the team that had the ball last was going to win."
Young threw for 387 yards, completing 27 of his 43 pass attempts, with his toss to Britt punctuating his best day since becoming the Titans' starting quarterback on Oct. 1.
"It was hard. It takes a lot of patience and confidence, and I really feel like our offensive line did a great job giving me some time," Young said. "We always say with the offensive line blocking, we have to do our part as the skill guys and just seeing Hawk (Lavelle Hawkins) come in and step up, (Jared) Cook coming in and making some big catches, and Kenny Britt as well, that's beautiful."
Young's poise in directing the Titans to the end zone as time expired brought back memories of the 2006 Rose Bowl when Young directed Texas to a 41-38 win over USC, scoring on an 8-yard run with 19 seconds left. The quarterback for USC in the historic national championship game was Matt Leinart, who was standing on the Cardinals' sideline helplessly watching Young strike again.
Leinart started in the place of Kurt Warner, who was inactive, recovering from a concussion. Leinart was solid throwing for 220 yards on 21 of 31 passing, but again was overshadowed by Young's heroics.
"It was funny because it was second or third down on the goal line and Steve (Breaston) came up to me and he was like, 'God, this is déjà vu all over again," Leinart said. "He did that to Michigan and he did that to myself in the title game. That is what it's all about, to put your team in position to win games."
Of the 18 plays in the final drive, Young threw 16 times, connecting with four receivers, including Hawkins and Cook. Hawkins hadn't made a catch the entire season, and Cook had but seven receptions. Both made timely catches to continue the drive. Hawkins' 13-yard reception on fourth down from the Cardinals' 44 was one of three successful fourth-down conversions.
Britt's TD catch was the most significant, but a memorable catch during the drive came early when tight end Bo Scaife, cutting across the middle of the field, hauled in a deflected pass for a 19-yard reception.
"Young guys stepped up," Fisher said. Hawk's (Hawkins) catches, Jared Cook's catches, Kenny (Britt) catching the ball, just stepped up on that drive."
Both of Cook's receptions resulted in a first down, with his 16-yard catch with 21 seconds left giving the Titans a first-and-goal from the 9.
Young's pass on first down was incomplete. On second down he was dropped for a sack, and his third down pass over the middle to Nate Washington fell incomplete.
With one final shot remaining, Young looked over the middle where he found Washington and Britt within feet of each other, with Britt hauling in the game-winning TD.
"It's all about having confidence in my teammates and letting those guys do what they have to do," Young said.

ayuh.....I figure playing Colts on ML will be about -400 this week and if that holds, I'll likely put $100 on them as my first hedge against my $20 Titans SBowl ticket
