Step-daughter gets married 10/10.

Lives near Hartford, CT. I live nearer to New Haven, CT.

Next Sat/day she goes to Italy for a week with the Hubby. I don't know flight times.

Flight is out of JFK. I hate NY, I always fly out of Hartford to avoid NY airports. I don't know my way around NYC, at all.

SD balks at paying the approx $300 fare for Conn Limo ( really a bus), for them, can you drive me there ?

I really want to say NO, to this. I have found JFK parking for them for like $90 for the week.

I don't think I'm a dick for not wanting to drive from East of New Haven and back to JFK, and pick them up, when they can park for a week for like $90.

Return flight could be delayed for hours, too !

I'd rather pay their parking, than do this.

I won't do it, actually !

Am I unreasonable with this ?

You are right on, Doug!

There is very little that I despise more than someone asking to be taken or picked up at the airport. I mean seriously, pay the $40 for a cab or pay for the parking, don't make me use up half my day waiting for you at the airport. One time a friend kept asking so I told him I would pay for the cab fare and he finally agreed. That was the best $40 I ever spent in my life and he forgot about return fare, so evidentally he had to pay that out of pocket! Imagine the look of horror on his cheap ass when he realized I had only given him the fare to get to the airport (I didn't tell him how much it cost before he left). LOL

It's unreasonable, IMO. I'll gladly pay the $90 parking fee myself, so I don't have to drive to NYC-JFK twice, call it a an additional wedding gift. It's a good 2 hour drive each way ( 4X) !

I'll even let them swap me one of their junk cars, for my much better F-150, for a week...if that's the problem.

Wow, 2 hours each way! No question you are in the right here..airport is only about 45 minutes away here. Can't imagine 2 hours each way four times!

Well, it's not $40, this would be more like $200+ (one-way) by taxi, about 100+ miles.

They should have used Hartford airport , not JFK.

I'm not driving this, exactly why JFK, and Laguardia are not options for me. I do Hartford, did Whiteplains once.

I'm here in on the Fairfield / Bridgeport line.
My wife just got back from Birmingham out of JFK.
I know my way around NYC, and still one wrong sneeze and your in bumfuck Queens.
And once you get to JFK it's no picnic, upstairs, downstairs, Delta international here, Delta domestic there, the only one who have a clue are the black cars and yellow cabs, and their mentally is move or be moved.
Van Wyck is a bitch when it gets down to 2 lanes, during rush hour it's like 1 hour just from the Whitestone to JFK.

And yeah, the Conn Limo is just a bus on steroids.

two hours is a kind estimate, might be 3.

Hartford to JFK is like 100 miles, and NYC is the largest city in the USA, plus I am unfamiliar with the city.

I don't even take my wife to the airport anymore .....when its work trips she takes a cab (I am talking about several trips /year)

Lets see this angle:

The guy is going to take care of your SD, after she marries the guy.......isn't HE suposed to start taking care of her????

how about if you give them a present .........a GPS........get the cheapest garmin nuvi you can find............

they are really cheap and very useful.......I have used them in the US at least 5 times. It really beats the crap out of driving and trying to find your way with maps etc

I'll gladly loan them my GPS, even my truck, to drive there.

The pickup is a problem.... what if the flight is like 5 hours late ?

you would check the airline site before you even leave your house

the problem is that at JFK/EWR/LGA it's very common to have air traffic delays so instead of a 5 hour delay you would most likely be facing a 1-2 hour (unless they get diverted AND THEN you would be REALLY screwed up )

luckily for you (if you take them) transatlantic flights /long hauls always get priority..the ones that always get screwed up in NYC are flights like NYC-BOS or NYC-PIT ....they ALWAYS get megadelayed

If your step-daughter is old enough to get married and go to Italy she should be old enough to figure out how to get from Connecticut to NYC. Your not even close to being in the wrong.

They should call you from the airport right before boarding to let you know the flight is on time or delayed. Also, you can check the flight status on-line right before you leave. I have the same problem this Saturday on USC-ND gameday. I am the only one around for a ride from Chicago.

The request is reasonable. Declining is reasonable

A GPS and a $100 bill would be worth the same to them, is something you are willing to offer and getting out of driving them would be worth a lot to you, so why not do that?

you can check to see if the flight is going to be late by internet on the morning of the pick up.

that said, I dont think there is anything wrong with NOT doing this. Its a nightmare

Give them money for the limo, and then move and change your phone# while they are away.

I'd offer to drop them off and let someone else go get them that way you would not be faced with any delays on the flight back. Also shows you are willing to help them out. Tell them you'll take them but someone else will have to pick them up. Try to plan something for the day they return so you will be tied up doing other things
