I am ready to get engaged, but I am entering very unfamiliar territory, and need your help.

First, what diamond to buy? What to look for? Where do I get the Best deals? What Amount I should look to spend? How long should I shop? Can you negotiate with jewelers?

Obviously, I have a lot of questions.. I don't know when I will propose but it would be nice to have the ring for when the time is right.

I am trying to raise some money for the ring by selling all my sports autograph memorabilia. If you are interested, I have some very nice pieces, please take a look. I was able to get permission from RX to post them in the Costa Rica and Offshore Bookie Chit Chat part of the forum. http://www.therxforum.com/showthread.php?t=719612

You will see pictures of what I have for sale there.

However, I would love all your knowledge on diamond shopping. I am clueless.

Thanks:toast::toast:

Got engaged a few weeks ago. Did not go for a traditional diamond. Instead, I went for a sapphire (which is her birth stone) center with 2 diamonds on the side. Went over very very well with her and also all the other girls. I highly recommend this type of ring.

I got it custom made by a jeweler friend based on images from bluenile.com.

They got this type of ring from about $800 to $17000 depending on the size of the stones. My custom made one cost about $2000 and was more than adequate.

Good luck with the proposal.

So what cheezy way u plan on asking her???

One of my friends proposed last christmas and wrote will you marry me on the front lawn in christmas lights and then sung a backstreet Boys song. I will never look at him the same again.

Just get her something unique or even custom made, so she will know how special she is. As far as the proposal, I did it in front of our families at xmas. She never saw it coming and we were able to share the moment with everyone. GL.
edit: and you have your xmas presents covered!

She has her grandmas engagement ring. Would it be wrong to take the diamond from that, place it in another setting and add a couple diamonds??

Maybe buy her a nice band to go with it. When you ask her use the band and see what she wants to do with the ring.? Or ask her family.

I would suggest to start with something small, trade up later

I do not know how strongly you are attached to your sports memorabilia. So I am going to assume that you really like them. I have to say that is a nice gesture to sell those to so you can buy the right ring for your woman. Being a woman myself, the ring would mean that much more knowing you did that to buy me my ring.

As far as what ring to buy her really depends on what kind of woman she is. What I mean is what type of personality she has, what she does on her free time, at her dream job, ect. I also recommend that you pay attention to what kind of jewelry she has already and which one(s) she wears more often. To give you an idea.....

I personally am a Tomboy; I do a lot of outside activites like backpacking and biking. As far as my jewelry box well....I do not own one. I did not wear jewelry unless it was for a really nice action like a wedding. Then I would barrow some. What I got for my engament ring is similar to what I have for a wedding ring. It is a white gold band with unique designs etched into it and will not brake and scratch. I did not want have a stone in my engament or my wedding ring. Mainly because I did not want to lose them when I am out doing the things I love to do.

Now my cousins, she is a girly girl. She could stand in a puddle of mud and not get dirty. She likes to cook, nit, and read, and other clean activities. She owns two jewelry boxes stuffed full. Most of them are huge gody things. Which that is exactly the kind of ring she got and she loves it.

I hope this helps. Good luck. I hope she says “YES!”
