Am considering a move to Portland (Oregon) in the Spring, and have always wanted to see some of this country. If anyone has experiences they'd like to share I'd appreciate it.

I went on a cross country trip from Texas to California and from Texas to Wyoming last summer. WAS AWESOME.

There are a bunch of 'scenic byways' which are just breathtakingly beautiful to drive through. Just take a GPS and whenever you get tired, locate the nearest motel. It's really easy.

Wouldn't trade the experience for anything. Do it, you won't regret it. And I even did it when gas was like $4.

Going through the rockies, especially, is just amazing. Might be a little different now that snow is setting in though, just a caveat.

I'm really looking forward to national parks in Wyoming - hopefully by Spring that area is generally driveable.

Definitely won't be doing it in the winter - early/mid Spring is my plan. Will be going it alone, as I don't think I could handle being around anyone for that length of time - also, while I'm traveling I want to keep my options open.

did the drvie to vegas again this year...was 26 hours......just like stated before, can be rough, if u arent getting along great with your road partner....good music helps, but man it can get old....sounds like u are planning more sightseeing, which probably wouldnt be as bad, as you wont be in the car for hours upon hours, without breaks...if u are stopping at places and taking your time, i would imagine its alot better..

I once drove across and back to see the USA when I was 23. Covered 8000 miles in about 3 weeks time. I'll never forget that trip.

Appreciate all the thoughts so far.

I am intending to take it easy. Maybe stop for sporting events if possible, spend a night in the larger cities (cleveland? Pittsburgh?) enjoying the nightlife... I really want to be prepared but at the same time leave myself the ability to be spontanious.

Just did this last summer. Iowa, Nebraska, and Utah was terrible to drive in. The mountains around Denver was cool. Hell it was June and it was snowing. Take your time. No need to drive at night. If you plan it out right you can stop at casinos on the way.

The farthest I've driven was Iowa to Maine and back a few times. I like to get audio books so you don't have to always be looking for stations. Band of Brothers audio was great and so was the hobbit.

your gonna be road weary and just crash wherever you stay so i wouldnt bother with the big city hotels....more cash and more headache with parking and stuff...cleveland and pgh are both shitholes anyway

Two of my best friends in High School hitch hiked across the country when they were 15 years old in 1975. In retrospect, that's insane.
