In the MIN vs PIT game Farve threw a ball that was tipped and touched the field goal post, and was almost caught again.

If a ball hits the post on a throw, is it still live?

good question. i'm guessing it would be a dead ball, kind of similar to the new stadium in dallas where they ruled that if a ball hit the scoreboard it would be ruled dead.

Except the goalposts are part of the field of play, whilst the scoreboard is artificial...

that's true....if a kicker misses a FG and the ball bounces off the upright and goes back to the end zone without hitting out of bounds first, would it be returnable if the defending team had a player back there? i'm thinking yes, so therefore i would now think a pass would still be live....

but i don't know

Any ball striking the goal post is dead.

The ref underneath the post did not blow the whistle when it hit the post. Instead he got into position to look at the receivers feet to see if they were in. Obviously he dropped the ball, but when the ref did that it made me think it was playable. I am going to try to find the rulebook.
