So I am in the market for a home alarm. Not really sure where to start. Hope someone has been down this road and can offer some advice.

Is this something for a do it yourselfer? Are the DIY systems as good as the corporate outfits? Is one brand better than another?

This is for the home I am living in, not a house under construction. I assume that will mean using wireless gadgets and such. I think I just need the basics like a main controller, some window/door contacts, and maybe a motion detector for backyard. One small thing, I need it to work on the driveway/alley gate. That's important.

TIA

Put motion lights around your property.
Put some sort of security stickers in your windows.
Put beware of dogs signs around your property.
You'll be golden.

You most likely don't need what I have...But Check out ADT..:103631605
It's not as much as you would think.

When you are doing Windows and Doors, they need to be hard Wired.
I don't think a Do it yourself, is 100% safe.

IT'S CALLED A PIT BULL

best security system i have seen

i have not locked a door in over 10 years, these dogs are gentle and friendly but nobody has balls to enter a house with one inside

so for a few bucks you get a best friend and security system all in one

My uncle has made millions owning a home security business. The money is in the monthly fees for the monitoring service. I had one for free for 3 years. Worked fine but really never needed it.

Unless you are in a higher crime area I would not do it. Deadbolts on all outside doors and no bushes in front of windows where a criminal can hide.

Motion lights outside are great around all access doors. Blinds drawn at night on all windows.

Think like a criminal. Dogs hear much better than us, so wether they are big or not, if they bark when they hear something that is another good option.

Good luck, you never know if the guy monitoring the system in the middle of the night is awake or not.

I don't live anywhere near a High Crime area, but I do it to Protect my Family and My property.

A friend, that I owed a favor to, was selling them, so I bought it from him. I was a good unit and from a good company but be aware that all they have to do is snip the telephone wires and you have virtualy nothing. I would guess that most burgulars know this.

understood. It does give you a sense of security. If one feels the comfort and safety with a monitoring system then that is the way to go, if you can justify it financially.

Phone line cut, no monitoring. To prevent this would require any buried lines to go directly through the basement wall with the companies box in the basement. No outside wires exposed.

The phone line may be cut but I don't know any robber who would want to go into a house with the alarm system blaring off as loud as can be even if the system isn't monitored by an outside agency.

You can set it up to automatically to send a signal to the monitoring company if the line is cut. Many false alarms. For instance, today I changed my phone service and the line was down for a half hour. If I would not have turned my alarm of it would send a signal to the monitor company.

#1 the alarm goes off.

it'll take some time for the police to show up, and no cop is gonna risk their life to save your property. last thing they wanna do is enter a house when there could be someone in there with a gun.

so anytime a cop gets called to a house with a tripped burglar alarm I'll bet big money the cop is gonna take his time getting there.

yeah the alarm will scare some teenager looking for drug money, but a pro will have a plan to get in and get out.

#2 you can't stop a pro

#3 cheaper to just buy insurance and hide the stuff you don't want stolen.

#4 don't let anyone know what you got (your friends big mouth is your worst enemy)

i know with adt in ga, a friend of mine had it. i thought that if the alarm was set off the police automatically responded, but that's not the case. the police only respond if they feel like it. and chances are, if you have one false alarm, they're not gonna bother responding to the next. personally, i'd get a good sized dog. my rottweiler ain't nothing but a big puppy, but folks show him an awful lot of respect.

Worth every penny of the $70 a quarter I pay. The alarm sometimes gets set off by accident and without fail the alarm company calls within 30 seconds. Don't ever fall into a sense of security that you live in an area with no crime. I could tell you stories that would make your skin crawl (and that is just in our little "safe town"- from rape to murder to child kidnapping) Crime knows no zip code and can strike anytime anywhere. There was once a lawn company that was canvassing for burglaries in a gated 500K plus neighborhood. They got 4 homes and were finally caught.

Remember a knife or a bullet will take care of a dog. Yes, you will have people who would care less that an alarm is going off but that is such a small portion. Most would run. Some added benefits: there is a panic button that noitifies 911 immediately, fire settings etc. Ours has an auto back up (radio) if the line is cut.

Belongings can be replaced human life can not. Get one immediately is my advice.

i love that one. kind of like owning a handicap sticker. if a burglar alarm is gonna deter someone, the sign should do it. i still like the big dog idea. a thief ain't near as scared of what you might do to em as much as they're afraid of the idea of what a dog might do to em.
