New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is trying to turn Hot Dog-Gate into an opportunity to help the less fortunate in New Jersey.

Sanchez
Sanchez has bought 500 hot dogs and 500 hamburgers, along with buns and rolls, through A&P supermarket, and donated them to the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown, N.J.
Sanchez was the subject of criticism -- and he later issued an apology -- when he was caught on camera Sunday eating a hot dog on the sideline during the Jets' 38-0 victory against the Raiders.
Sanchez was criticized two weeks ago for looking dejected on the sideline after throwing five interceptions in an overtime loss to Buffalo. He was happy enough after his performance Sunday, in which he threw for a touchdown and ran for another, but this time, he was caught by television cameras trying to discreetly eat a hot dog at the end of the blowout.
"I want to apologize for that," he said. "I wasn't feeling very good and didn't eat much before the game, so I was feeling a little queasy. Toward the end of the game, I probably should have eaten one of those bars or something, but someone offered [a hot dog], so I grabbed it and tried to be discreet about it, but obviously not discreet enough. So I shouldn't have done that, and it won't happen again."
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Can someone explain why this is a big deal? Did he break some kind of unwritten rule or something? He was trying to hide it.

I mean I can see if he kicked back with his feet up and was eating a box of popcorn how that would disrespect the other team.

Nice gesture, however seems like he should have donated to an Oakland area soup kitchen, right?

Theyre just trying to write something out of nothing, remember the media needs to this for a living. If no such story like this they would probably lose their job. Beside, people wont take this a big deal.

If I had to guess, it's because he's eating something unhealthy and young players may get the wrong idea.

If that's the case, the media better disclose what a normal diet is in a NBA player's life. Hint. Big Macs during halftime.

he shouldn't have to apologize for eating..

kinda what i was thinking....i mean the timing wasnt great, but still, if he felt bad, eat something....

Its like a guy having to leave the field to use bathroom...we have all been there, when u simply cant hold it, and dont want to shit all over yourself......these guys might make millions, but they ARE human..

He just looked silly doing it. I mean why can't you wait 20 minutes to eat one in the locker room? I just found it kinda weird. And of all things to eat, a disgusting hot dog?

But I agree he shouldn't have to apologize

Don't feel bad for Sanchez apologizing. I'm sure his agent is probably working on something with Nathan's hotdogs for a promotional commercial this off season. This could be spun into a great ad campaign.

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) took some grief on Sunday for snacking on a hot dog in the middle of a blowout win over the Oakland Raiders. Forget that Sanchez had been ill throughout the week and unable to eat in the lead-up to the game, there was enough criticism that Sanchez felt the need to apologize for satisfying his hunger (even though such an apology was totally unnecessary).

Now Sanchez is going even further. In a charitable, yet firmly tongue-in-cheek, homage to his mid-game snack, Sanchez will donate 1,000 hot dogs and hamburgers to a New Jersey soup kitchen. The team released the news on its official Twitter account:

Mark Sanchez has purchased 500 hot dogs, 500 hamburgers, buns and rolls through A&P to donate to the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown.

Looking at the prices at the Morristown A&P, it looks like 500 hot dogs, hamburgers and their appropriate buns would run about $750 at the checkout counter (and that's not counting the condiments -- Mark loves his mustard). That's pocket change for a guy who signed a contract earlier this year that guaranteed him $28 million, but it's still a kind, meaningful and amusing gesture from a 22-year-old who could instead be living up to the stereotype of a spoiled, rich-kid quarterback
