My wife found $100 ( 5 crumpled together $20 bills) on the floor at a Walmart today, picked them up, then went out to her car to call me.

She's no thief. I told her just keep it. If you turn it in at the service desk, you're just giving it to Walmart. She's all nervous about cameras and stuff.

Could this ever be considered a crime ? I think not.

I say:

Finders, Keepers, Losers, Weepers !

Remember this is cash, no wallet or ID.

not much you can do unless you go to the desk to see if anybody lost any money. they would have to say it was five twenty's though. or atleast say it was 100 bucks

Mill around the are for 5-10 minutes to see if anyone shows up frantically looking for it. If not, I walk guilt free.

ive worked at customer service desks before, if someone turns in cash and nobody claims it that day, one of the employees will just pocket it.

it seems like the right thing to do would be to turn it in but like post #7 an employee will pocket it, most likely as soon as someone turned it in

that is simple no-brainer you ask if anyone can identify the money and what it looks like if they can you have to give it back

First off does your wife work for Walmart? I hope not but if she does it could be one of those traps like on Trading Places. From what I understand when I worked retail if an employee finds anything of value that a customer may have lost it goes into a lost and found box with your name on it and if no one claims it after a week you have first dibs. Of course the Manager will take the money himself and say the shit got claimed.

If she doesn't work for Walmart then this is a pointless thread. Keep the money without a second thought. If she feels guilt then buy some toys for some needy kids shelter or childrens hospital. The holidays are coming up and the childrens and homeless charities are going to take a beating this season due to the economy.

keep it. if i'm doing my shopping, i pocket it and carry on. if they stop me at the door i'd just say that i was getting ready to return it but forgot. nothing wrong with this.

i have given back money when the person at the register gives me too much change, but to me that's different. find a hundred bucks lying around in a public place and it's mine.

Very simple.
If you see it fall out of someones pocket or purse you give it back.
If someone just left where you are standing and now the money is there you try to give it back.
If there is no way of knowing who it belongs to you keep it.
3 nights ago I dropped a hundie at dinner and someone pointed it out to me before i left. They could have said nothing and let me walk away and i would never known.

But i know more than half the population would never follow this rule. Either cause they are starving or just scum bags.
But i belive in do on to others....

I have taken on a new philosophy in life and this little exercise is the perfect example of my new way in thinking.

I have started to just go with the flow on things. For instance I woke up late the other day and was an hour and a half late for work and just simply told my coworkers God didn't allow/want me to wake up on time that day and I will not apologize or accept blame for arriving to work late. As fas as I know not getting on the freeway at that time that morning may have prevented me from getting in a car wreck.

Well if I find say money in a store be it loose bills on the floor or attached to an identifiable money clip or coin purse I would not turn it in. If a clerk gave me too much change back and I didn't notice it right away I would not go back to the store and correct their error. If I get too much food on a to-go order or some shit I buy at a store rings up cheaper than marked on the shelf I will count those as blessings.

I feel that life has a way of balancing itself out in strange ways. There are many times when us as consumers end up giving the clerk too much money and never ever notice it. The store doesn't donate the extra money to anybody it still goes into their pocket. Do you know how many times I have received an incorrect food order or crappy food from a drive thru or restaurant and never got reimbursed for that shit?

I will no linger tip a waitress simply because I am supposed to because their wages factor the tips in as part of their pay. They still have to earn a decent tip for me. I will factor in the service, quality and taste of the food. I will factor in if I am getting a good deal money wise for my portions and whether the restaurant has good ambiance and decor. No longer will I give the standard 20%. I work in sales and earn commission. My customers don't just choose to buy something from me regardless because I get a shitty hourly wage. I have to earn by offering the best price, service, delivery and knowledge of my product.
