The new craze is making Sofia a dangerous place to drive
<!---->
The chief prosecutor's office in the country's capital Sofia has received reports of people speeding through red lights in order to win bets of up to 5,000 euros (almost £4,500).
The death defying game has become known as "Russian Road Roulette".
The rules apparently state that, in order to win, the driver must not touch their brakes, crash into cars or pedestrians nor leave the road.
Onlookers gambling on the outcome are also risking their lives by watching in such close proximity.
Local media in Sofia have reported that the craze started in the summer and usually takes place at busy intersections late at night.
In June two people died after a motorcyclist crashed into a crowd watching on Sofia's ring road.
"Every time we receive a signal for such an unregulated race, we send patrols," said Commissioner Vanio Stoevski, head of the Sofia Road police.
Authorities are now keeping watch on the roads they think could attract the game's organisers.
But the local of the urban street races remain difficult to predict because they are often planned via text message at short notice.
