I know a lot of people here use this and from the almost weekly posts a lot more should.....New version 9.0 is out...totally free though like most places u have to look around the site a few minutes to find the free version....Could get off a buck or 2 and buy it also i guess.

If this link works the free version is at the very bottom where it says exsisting users update... . http://www.avg.com/ww-en/upgrade-full

Have the entire AVG Internet Security Suite and it works like a charm. Before that I had used Norton (free version) and when AVG scanned my computer for the first time it found a ton of stuff that Norton had missed (adware, cookies, etc). Definitely worth the download and price, in my opinion.

I had this computer guy at my house this week working on my wireless network. I was asking him some questions and he asked me what virus protection i used. When I told him the free Avg he rolled his eyes like I was an idiot. He said it was the worst thing out there.

WTF I just got what somebody told me to get. I don't have any virus problems ...knock on wood. You know how computer dorks are though. They all think their way is the only way.

AVG - like several av programs - is a resource whore. So, depending on the age of your operating system and the amount of RAM available, it can cause other programs to run slower as they will all have lower priority

Unless you're actively downloading streaming video and/or audio files, you can usually protect yourself just fine by running scans every couple days and leaving the "guard" off.

I used to use AVG the free about 6 months ago it did not catch this virus and i had to get the Vipre virus software program to clear it out... AVG free SUCKS

Vipre runs much easier on my system and does not take up as much room and memory and slow your PC down like AVG

A computer guy who recently worked on my computer put the anti-virus program Avasti on my computer. It's free. And he said it doesn't slow your computer down like some of these other anti-virus programs. It works like a charm. And has already red-flagged a couple potential viruses that I ran across on the net.

actually installed Avira about three months ago and run a scan once a week (nothing detected in a dozen scans now) while not running the "guard" system.

Wait until you search for the Carrie Prejean sex tape. I'm sure Avira will light up while you're chasing that down.

Than x for all the input guys.

To clarify , i put this up because in the past few weeks we've had several different posters asking for help that had NO anti-virus. I put this up because for 1...its free and #2 i use it and have never had any problems.
But i do see ur points so just to be clear....A sticky post on ur computer screen telling u to beware of viruses is better than nothing and uses far less resources than ANY anti-virus program ....

Ya know if i offered a dry mouth SOB a glass of water id get at least 15 people posting that they use better water than that plus u dont have to pee as often with their water.....

Thanks, I'll be using one of these, once my free Norton ends, on my new laptop.

No anti-virus has all the protection against every virus. So some people hawking one virus protection over another will say "well our virus protection X caught this one while your virus protection Y didn't". That may be true but there are some that Y will catch that X doesn't.

Just happened to see this and like Pats, Ive used Avast home edition for years w/ no trouble. Also a program called CC Cleaner along with Malware Bytes are great. With those 3 run weekly you will have no trouble :103631605

This is the exact programs that I had put on my computer. Avasti along with Malware Bytes and CC Cleaner. He told me that Avast doesn't slow your computer down like the Norton does. He was right, because I used to have Norton.
