World Series most valuable player voters made a fine choice in selecting
Hideki Matsui after his New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia
Phillies four games to two this past week. Matsui had an excellent Series,
which included an incredible six RBIs in the Yankees' 7-3 clinching win in
Game 6. But here's a vote for Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who provided
his team an edge that no other playoff squad enjoyed. Seven of the eight
playoff teams watched their closer either give up the eventual winning run
in the ninth inning or later or blow a lead in this year's postseason. In
short series with two good teams usually try to scrape up enough runs to
win, a dependable closer means as much as anybody on the roster. Rivera
pitched in 12 of the Yankees' 15 postseason games and allowed only one
run in 16 innings of work, he allowed one run to cross the plate in a 5-2
win over the Angels. Rivera won the 1999 World Series MVP, but he easily
could've won the award this year and 1998. It's hard to think of someone
who universally respected as underappreciated, but Rivera might be.

FREE AGENT MARKET
At 12:01 today, the free agent market officially opens, meaning clubs no longer have exclusive negotiating rights to the players on their team last season. Let the wheeling and dealing begin.

*Big news from yesterday. Seems Jason Bay turned down a four year offer from the Red Sox for around 60 million.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS

The Cubs are one of the teams Blue Jays has contacted regarding former Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay. Halladay is owed $15.75 million in 2010, and the Blue Jays' wish list includes some of the Cubs' top prospects. Last season, Halladay was 17-10 with 2.79 ERA, and is a free agent after 2010.

WASHINGTON
The Nationals say No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg has a dislocation in his left knee joint and should be fine for spring training. Strasburg was examined Friday in Los Angeles. The Nationals say Strasburg will not require surgery, and that treatment will include rest and physical therapy. The San Diego State right hander twisted his knee during a workout Thursday and has been scratched from his start in the Arizona Fall League championship game.

The American League MVP will be announced today at 2 p.m eastern. The favorite seems to be Joe Mauer, catcher for the undermanned Minn Twins. Derek Jetter (Yankees) will also be given strong consideration. A couple other candidates: Miguel Cabrera (Tigers) and Mark Teixeira (Yankees).

AMERICAN LEAGUE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

Twenty six year old Joe Mauer was named American League MVP. Mauer recieved 27 of 28 first place votes. He becomes only the second catcher to win the award during past 33 years. Yankees' Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter were second and third.

St. Louis Cardinal slugger Albert Pujols is a favorite to win the National League MVP. Pujols led the majors with 47 home runs, 124 runs scored and a .658 slugging percentage. Prince Fielder (Brewers first baseman) should also get strong consideration. He had 45 HR, 141 RBI and a .602 slugging percentage.

NATIONAL LEAGUE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

Albert Pujols received all 32 first place votes to win his second straight National League MVP Award. This is his third overall making Pujols just the tenth player in history to win three MVPs. He is only the fifth player in the National League to win it three times. Only twelve players have ever won back-to-back MVP awards.

Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez was second and Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard was a close third.

TORONTO

The Blue Jays signed shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a one year deal worth $2.75 million yesterday, which includes a club option for 2011. The 32 year old Gonzalez split last season between Cincinnati and Boston, batting .238 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs. The Venezuelan was an All-Star in 1999, and is a career .247 hitter with 114 home runs and 521 RBIs. The move came a day after backup shortstop John McDonald agreed to a $3 million, two year deal that effectively marked the end of free agent Marco Scutaro's time with the club.

TIM LINCECUM

Back to back Cy Young Awards finds Giants Tim Lincecum in an interesting position as he enters his first arbitration eligible season. Lincecum earned $650,000 in 2009. Reports raised the possibility that he could earn well beyond the record $10 million for a player in his first year of arbitration eligibility, set by Ryan Howard in 2006.

Teams can offer free agents arbitration by 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, and players may accept (though almost all won't) by 11:59 p.m. December 7, the first day of Winter Meetings.
