Would resolution that much even matter on a 55 inch screen?

You need higer resolutions as the tv gets bigger and I doubt anyone would have a big enough tv to get anything out of that.

You can't? Not even Planet Earth?

How about Baraka? Are using an HDMI cable to connect your Blu-ray player to the tv?

Of course I am using an HDMI cable. The difference between 1080i and 1080p ? It seems minute.

I don't see how the human eye is going to notice something like 2160

Ya, there are many reliable sources who suggest anything more than 720p at 50" and lower is a waste. 1080p and higher is nice for use as computer monitors of course. Projectors are really the only devices used in homes that would benefit. Also worth pointing out is that there is essentially 1 source of 1080p content (blu-ray). No source for higher than 1080p yet.

I'm not saying we won't get there, but the benefits won't be as apparent and it'll be awhile before content catches up... There are already bandwidth issues for cable and satalite providers.

Thank you for this info. I am getting ready to buy several TVs and was trying determine what is best 720 or 1080, based on what you said, I guess I can with a 720 on the 42" and 50".

Admittedly, 50" is the "turning point" - but ya, I believe cnet as well as a bunch of the folks at the avsforum think 1080p is unnecessary at the sizes you mention. Prices on 720p plasmas have really taken a nose dive, with 50" models selling for less than $700 regularly. Great value.
