Very difficult today for my wife & i as i had to put him away. He was sufering from bad hips & could only go up a step or two but other than that was a real joy to be around. He would have been 12 the end of this month & we had him since he was about 6 mo's old, he did not show any other problems as sat he was just fine, but sunday i noticed he did not even want to go outside to do his business & had very little appetite & just layed around with out getting up,matter of fact i had to help him up to get him to take a few steps so after 3 days of this i literally carried him into the vet[ he weighed 82 lbs]. The vet did a blood test & his kidneys & lungs were only functioning about 50% & the vet said he had pneumonia & wanted to put him down then but the wife would not hear of it so the vet gave him a couple shots in hopes of helping his hip displacement & some anti biotics so we brought him home but after watching the poor dog just lay around & do nothing but drink water & then throw it up for 2.5 days i carried him into the vet. It only took a minute for him to be put away, we had him creamated. I just came home & got rid of everything that was around that was his and threw it all away. I don't know if i will get another dog as i am 71 yrs.old & am a caretaker for my wife who is only 56yrs old [spends 23 hrs a day in a recliner] as she can hardly walk, she suffers from adult scoliosis, diabetis, menopause & depression so i do all the cooking, cleaning, shopping & what not, so i have a lot on my plate but i do not want to be selfish as the wife has not ruled out getting another golden retriever & after how hard it is on both of us to lose our love that we both loved to death as it was very difficult & quite a few tears & sorrow filled our day, sorry toramble buthad to get it off my chest to someone, thanks for listening/reading. I am heading out to bob evans to get a carry out as i took today off from cooking but will be back here later tonight.

Very sad story I am extremely sorry for your loss. Dogs or any animal for that matter become a part of life and a part of the family. When my dog died it was like I lost a brother so I know exactly what your going through. My dog has been dead for about 9 years and I still think about him everyday.

I am so sorry to hear that. I have been through that myself. Just try to take comfort in knowing that you gave him a great home with lots of love
and he will always have a special place in your heart.

Sometimes IMO its worse then a person because you live with your dog and spend most of the day, everyday with him. When a person dies who you know but barely see your nowhere near as attached.

Man, Very sorry to hear that....

Yes it's Very hard to put down a Pet....Have been through it myself a number of times, and hurts everytime !

I know Goldens always have Hip problems, and it's a shame at age 12.

I'm sure it's not easy at your age and all that you do for your wife, but the Best part of having a pet...is the Love they show..and being a part of the family.

Might be Too soon, but I would get another dog...Because they are for the Most part, Therapy for people.

Sparticus- I almost had to put down my 11 year old Golden (Oscar) this summer after he got pnuemonia. I dreaded and still dread the day I will finally have to say goodbye. He got a steak treat after I read your post in memory of your dog. My thoughts are with you.

My golden had to be put down as his hip gave out while he was outside in the yard. Terrible thing for me, the wife and the kids to see. He went into shock and they had to come to the house and put him down. Still remember that day 9/9/99. Hang in there my friend it will get better and soon you will be thinking of all the good memories you had. Also very sorry to hear about your wife's health issues as well. Hang in there and tomorrow will be better. I am a huge dog lover but am not home enough to care for a dog but all the dogs in the neighborhood get spoiled by me and my bag of dog treats.

My little black shitzu who has been my best little pal for the past 15 years is getting close I know, and I can't stand to think about they day I'm going to have to go through something similar to what you just did.

I can't even handle watching the end of the movie Marley & Me.....

Words can't describe how bad i feel for you. To me there are no closer friends than a dog.I put my two dogs down two years ago after having them for 17 years. They were closer to me than my kids that were grown. It took me two years to get over with and my wife talked me into buying two more. We got a brother and a sister, and they are as close to us as any pet could be.Where we go, they go.A person that isn't a pet person wouldn't understand all this.It sounds like you have a lot on your plate and only you knows what you can or cannot do, but a new dog may be what you need. It is a big step this early, but it may lessen the hardship. I sure didn't want to get another, but my wife talked me into it and i'm sure glad.It will get better, but will take time.

You have my deepest condolences.

I buried Bugsy last week in the front flower garden. I put him there so he could still watch over the house. He was always with me when I did yard work.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Judging by your post it sounds like you took great care of him. Sometimes when you lose a pet, you feel like you did something wrong in the process of caring for them. I can tell by your post that your dog wouldn't have had it any other way.

I had to put to sleep my Yellow Lab a year ago. Such a good natured dog, never would hurt a fly. All the years of swimming in our pool like a mad man took it's toll on him. Very sad. He wouldn't have had it any other way I'm sure.

Oh gawd.......terrible.
I have a 15yr old husky wolf, in great health and happy but probably his last Xmas!
Eyes are watering thinking about that sad day.

You got 12 great years with your best friend. Only good thing I can say.

Dogs......... the only living thing on earth that gives you unconditional love.

Like everyone here has said, it's such a terrible decision to have to make. Pets, especially dogs, are very much members of the family...which is why having to put them down isn't much different than having to put one of your own family members down in my opinion. I haven't owned a dog since I was a teenager, and sometimes I still miss that damn thing when I think about it.

Call the movie cheesy if you like, but here's a quote from the end of Marley & Me that sums it up pretty perfectly:

A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water log stick will do just fine. A dog doesn't care if your rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he'll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?
