Got a good deal on an HP Netbook yesterday (on Veteran's Day) at the Ft. Myer PX, $309 (no tax!).

I'm starting to travel quite a bit and my laptop is a Toshiba, but it's pretty bulky (and heavy). So, I figured for $309, why not?

Anyone have one of these or any insights?

Was going to get a Netbook last month, but changed my mind after seeing some of the new Laptops.
They make them light weight ( most of them ) and I just couldn't get what I wanted in a Netbook.

I think what you got was a Great deal ( depending what's in it )
But I wonder if you would have been better waiting for "Black Friday" Sales.....

I got an ACER EE PC Netbook and really like it. It was like $380 or so all in but has almost a 10 hr battery life and is very convenient. Just keep it in a drawer in the kitchen and grab it on my way out when needed. All my buddies have wifi at their places (as do many restaurants and sports bars now) so it is nice to be able to jump online anywhere....

Bella, you may be right re: Black Friday....but, it was $329 (and this is at the Army base) and they had a $20 off coupon for Veteran's Day....additionally, there's no tax. I haven't priced it elsewhere, but it would have to be in the $280 range (at Best Buy or another non-military stor) for it to be less than what I paid. 7% tax on $300 is $21 in tax savings.....

DN, that's basically the plan I have for it. I'll use my Toshiba while I'm home...but when I leave the house I'll take it with me. I don't have an iPhone and I'm taking grad school classes (mostly on-line) so I really need it for getting online and working on school work (while traveling)....I'm looking forward to using it! It's w/ the IT guys at work right now. They are loading it up for me w/ our CG programs and anti-virus....

I have a mini and I love it. Runs Explorer, Office, and all my work programs without a hitch. Can't play the fancy new games on it, but other than that it's everything I need for a portable computer.

I'm thinking about the HP mini 311.

It's not much bigger than most netbooks (11.5" x 8" x 1.2" x 3.22 lbs.) but the 11.6" screen makes a world of difference over the 10"ers. They say the keyboard is 92% of full size. Base model is $399 with windows 7.

But then again, the HP dm3 looks pretty sweet to....13.3" and still pretty light & portable (12.8" x 9" x 1.2" x 4.21 lbs.). $549 base but Office Max has it for $499. Looks pretty slick too with that brushed aluminum case.

The Toshiba Satellite T135 also looks like a great machine in the 13.3" class but it's alot more $$$ than the HP dm3

You can get the HP mini 311 subsidized from Verizon for $199 with a 2 year data plan. Not worth it for me since I don't use 3G enough but if you already have & use a data plan....that's alot of computer for $200.

No...totally separate. It's a new 2 year contract only for the netbook. You basically get a new phone number that is only used to connect to the internet.

I meant if you you already had a data plan for a mobile broadband device (like a USB modem or a PC card) that you were using with a regular laptop.

I can't justify an extra $60/month for a new data plan just to save $200 on the mini 311.

I might just get the 311 for $400 and then upgrade my phone to a Droid. Verizon is allowing tethering (using your cell phones data plan to connect a laptop or netbook) on the Droid for an extra $15/month.

BAS...Are you still using that Virgin pay as you go USB modem?

Sounds like you need to bulk up a little bit so you can carry that little bit of extra weight instead of having to buy a girl's computer.

Just saw some off brand advertised at Radio Shack on Black Friday for $249. I'll be interested to see if I find the HP advertised for less than the $309 I paid...

I've been using an Acer Netbook since July as my main laptop. I can't justify paying CR prices for electronics.

It's been fine, but I never run any apps more powerful than dreamweaver.

Any idea when this new Apple tablet may be coming out? It will set the standard for these netbooks.
