LeBron said he is changing his number to 6... The number Bill Russell wore who has 5 more rings then Jordan... IMO anyone should wear whatever number they want.

Yeah, for LeBron to switch from Jordan's number to Russell's number
is pretty much pointless.

Lebron needs to change to # 1 for the 1 ring he is trying to get.

I guess James doesn't hold the same Regard for Russell, as he does for Jordan.

Pretty Stupid, if you ask me....

A Jersey number doesn't make the player

Did he mention Bill Russell at all or give a reason fro his change to #6?

Him ditching #23 probably has more to do with him wanting to popularize and be remembered by his own number and knows when people think of #23, they think Michael Jordan, not Lebron James....

I think what we're all saying is this isn't a Jackie Robinson type situation...

LeBron seems to be unware that there was basketball in the NBA BEFORE MJ.

Was MJ a helluva player? Absolutely!

Is he the best player of all time? Possibly/Probably. He's certainly in the team picture for best all time.

But to retire #23 from the Association??? I just don't see it...

I believe he said he is wearing 6 because he wore that number in the Olympics.

nah it shouldnt be retired league wide, just for the individual team.

of all the numbers though, 23 is bad if you want to popularize a number

Did I hear that right when a sports talk show host said that Miami retired Jordan's number last night? Now that is crazy.

Jordan was great...other players have been great too..

let the teams he played for retire it if they want, not the league

Exactly!!
Agree!!

MJ didn't exactly build any bridges with his HOF induction speech.

I answered "No" before reading anything on this. Now that I have I have to admit this was my 1st thought and the thought after is no doubt a marketing tool~~~ Good one to try and kick-up sales......

Money is the motive. This "fad" will end as quick as it started

No one should have their number retired league-wide, including Jackie Robinson.

I have no problem with Jackie Robinson's number being retired, but he should be the only one imo.

Imo, Magic and Bird are responsible for bringing the NBA back from the dead. Jordan took the league worldwide but doesn't deserve to have his number retired by the league.

There are some teams, like the Steelers, who just don't issue out numbers like 88, 12, or 75. That's the way it should be handled imo.
