I was thinking about buying my mom a new TV for Christmas this year. My mom currently pirates her cable from my sister who lives two houses down so I was wondering if I bought my mom an HDTV how would she be able to view high-def content?

Is there some kind of antenna, adapter or relay that I need to buy that will allow her to some of the stations in HD?

personally, i wouldn't give up free cable to get hdtv through the cable company, as you'd be looking at a good $75-$125 price swing

Can't you get your local stations in HD without a cable box?

i don't think so. but i'm not sure. seems like my local news is standard def. the major network programming is hd (with the box), but the minor local shit is standard def (with the box)

You can get HD without a cable box if you have an antenna on it and just get the free channels. Although some aren't in HD but ones like CBS and NBA are in 1080.

I really haven't seen a huge difference from standard to HD except on Blu-ray.

What size tv are you gonna get? Depending on the size you might only need one that does 720.

That's funny. Me and a couple relatives went in on a 32 inch LCD for my mom as well. Guess it's a good XMAS year to get mom a TV. Think she has cable, but if she wants HD I am sure comcast is going to want an extra 10 bucks or so.

Still, it's going to look better than the old fashion boob tube she has.

Hosnatcher, you need a provider for HD. You can't catch it free over the air. But, standard is still going to look nicer on a flat screen.

Regular cable going to be 480. HDTV is 720P or 1080i, def need a provider feed for that.

You need a box to decipher the HD signal. And if you have a HDTV w/o the box the picture is WORSE than a reg. TV. I know from experience. Jeez splurge and get your mother HD w/the cable, she may not be here that long and you'll wish you had!:toast:

If you have an HD TV you can get the major networks in HD with a $15.00 pair of rabbit ears. I get ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and a few locals crystal clear in Hd with a cheap antenna. To get premium channels you will need an HD cable box. And stop announcing that you steal cable as I work for Time Warner part time and now I have to report you.

As has been said, an antenna connected to new TV will give you the free OTA (over the air) stations, which are usually limited to major networks. The picture quality should actually be slightly better than with cable/satallite as there's no compression. If you go to http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx you can put in your infio and it'll tell you which channels you'd get with what type of antenna.

And people, stop saying you can't get HDTV over the air - You can, I do it everyday and have for about 8 years. Nothing better than spreading false information.

Just did some reading up on it, and you are absolutely right. You can IN FACT catch some channels free over the air on 720p / 1080i. That's amazing. Never knew that. Bad assumption on my part.

I thought the mandated move to digital was only for the encoding of a 480 signal. I was wrong.
