when using it at home ?

I am taking it out on my new laptop, to conserve it.

I plug it in, no longer take it to the bathroom when ....well, you know...

Always...

Why ?

You'll ruin the battery, and that is like 1/3 the cost of a lapper. I want to save the battery, for when needed.

I say just plug it in, with no battery, when at home.

might be a good idea besides if you get the battery sticky it could short out to , and that would not be good

I always leave mine in, battery is still good as new and it's approaching it's third year.

Most laptops are designed for you to leave the battery in ALL the time. The circuitry inside the machine, the power supply, even the battery itself. It should be left in whether you've got it plugged in to a power conditioner or not.

And you should know that the battery acts as a power conditioner itself - all the power from the power supply goes through the battery, if it's in place.

Actually, a power conditioner, or UPS, is nothing more than a big battery with an alarm on it.

So. leave the battery in. Discharge it all the way once a month (pull the plug a few hours before you have to go to bed, let it completely die and then plug it back in). And use the computer manufacturer's recommended conditioning software every so often to keep your battery fresh.

As to whether a battery will discharge over time if not in the machine, yes, it will. Left for months or years, it will discharge. So, it's a good idea to bicycle your batteries if you have more than one, rotating them every few weeks.

It's fine to keep your laptop on all the time. I do, and my screen is fine. If you're using a plasma screen for a second screen, make sure your screen saver kicks in there, or you may burn the desktop pattern into your big screen.

I keep my battery in when using my laptop, but regularly make sure I run the computer and drain the battery completely and then recharge it. I had another laptop that I never recharged the battery and ran it only using AC and it lasted 6 years but did ultimately fail and needed a new battery which would have cost $190, so I just bought a new laptop.

It is true that if you disconnect the AC source and run the computer and drain the battery, it will last longer. All batteries need to be recharged once in awhile even if they show 100% charged.

I figure to pop it in once in a while ( maybe once a month, for a day?), but I think the battery will last longer, if not in the PC F/T ?

I always left it in F/T in my last two LT's ( on my 3rd one now). They last 2-2.5 years ( the laptops).

Once that battery gets to like 20% of charge capacity, I know the LT will soon be dieing, and it's going to need a keyboard, power cord, battery, etc.

take the trade in for $100-150, spend $350, get a new one.

JMO

BTW, I generally use shit forever. I have a 10 year old truck, see no reason it won't go 10 more years.

I've got like a 40 year old commercial freezer, better than anything you could buy today. My clothes dryer must be 25 years old.

Any new D/W, Fridge, Washing machine....is fucking dead in 2 years flat.

Gimme a freebie ( or near free) refrig, washer, etc. off of Craigslist over anything fucking new appliance.

I like a refrig that has been running for 20 years, over a new one that might run 2 weeks, if you're lucky.

I use a laptop 365 days /year..so they only last 2 -3 years max

I just got a replacement battery, cost 60 bucks from amazon (don't buy the original one......its a ridiculous rip off)

Of course that I already knew that if I bought the battery something else would fail and sure enough, it was the power brick

So in these days where 600 dollars laptops are common.......if they last 2 years consider them as end-of-life and get a new one
