Gold was only a good investment at $800 or lower, in my opinion. Personally, I think it will hover between $1000-1350 for the next several years. Beyond that it is anyone's guess (after the world financial crisis dies down and a lot of people start to recover and become less panicked). That said, if the USD continues to be devalued by printing vast amounts of that may or may not be backed up by the F.R., gold should prove to be an excellent investment.
Gold is starting to appear everywhere tv, radio, magazines, and newspapers. That usally means we are closer to the top, at least short term. Who knows what the price may be in a few years.
For those that keep talking about vast amounts of money being printed, I would suggest you take a look at Japan. They have been running huge deficits for years and just recently announced deflation may be winning the war.
