[/FONT]East Lansing -- Officials at Michigan State University are investigating an incident at Rather Hall, a dormitory, Sunday evening in which an undetermined number of students were injured in a fight.
MSU police declined comment on their investigation, but Terry Denbow, a spokesman for the university, confirmed that "an altercation" involving students occurred in the dormitory, and an investigation by the department is ongoing.
"Police interviews are still going on," Denbow said. "The investigation is continuing."
A mother of a student reportedly involved in the fight said she was on campus to support her son, Brent Mitchell, who was to be interviewed by police Tuesday afternoon.
Denbow said he had no further information. He said he could not confirm a report in The State News that witnesses said the altercation involved members of MSU's football team and students from a local fraternity.
The State News is MSU's campus-run newspaper.
"I don't know," Denbow said, when asked about the identities of the students allegedly involved. "And even if I did, I would not identify students by their affiliation."
Reports of incidents on campus are the jurisdiction of the MSU police. A spokesman for the East Lansing police said the department was not involved.
The State News reported that witnesses described an assault that occurred in the lounge or Rather Hall at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. That would have been about 90 minutes after the football team's annual banquet, on campus, had ended. The student newspaper said that witnesses and students described an incident in which 15 to 20 men stormed the dormitory and injured about seven students, including women.
That alleged incident occurred after another incident at a local night club, early Sunday morning, The State News reported.
Mike Krueger, general manager of The Small Planet, a local night club, confirmed that a fight occurred on the dance floor at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday.
"There was an incident; I could not speak to who was involved," Krueger said. "There was an altercation in the middle of the dance floor; punches were thrown, et cetera. As to who was throwing punches, I don't know.
"The security team and I jumped into the middle of it to try to break it up as soon as possible," he said. "We shut down the party, right after that."
Krueger said no one was taken to a hospital.
Denbow said he did not know if the university would release any statements about the alleged incidents later Tuesday.

2 MSU Football Players Dismissed

MSU Won't Confirm Football Players Involvement

POSTED: Tuesday, November 24, 2009
UPDATED: 8:31 am EST November 25, 2009

<!--startindex-->EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State University head coach Mark Dantonio said Tuesday evening two of his football players have been dismissed from the team.
"Roderick Jenrette and Glenn Winston have been dismissed from the football team for violation of team rules," Dantonio said in a statement.
Winston already was out of action with a right knee injury.
Jenrette was lost for the rest of the regular season with a broken foot.
Winston was reinstated to the team in August. He had been indefinitely suspended after pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault charges over a fight that briefly left a Michigan State hockey player hospitalized.
Specifics of the reason for the players' dismissal were not given, but the announcement comes after a recent report of a large dorm fight that broke out at the university Sunday night.
Members of the Iota Phi Theta fraternity were hosting an event inside Rather Hall when witnesses told authorities about 20 men, allegedly some from the university’s football team, stormed in and started punching members of the fraternity.
Seven students were injured, some treated at Sparrow Hospital.
MSU freshman Edu Nweze witnessed the fight. He said his friend, who’s a member of the fraternity, was hit in the face.
"They ran in there and everybody in the fraternity got hit. Then they just left ... no one even had time to be like, 'Hey what's going on here?'" Nweze said. "I came down and there was blood down there. One of my close friends was bleeding and they took him to the hospital."
Witnesses told authorities the men who started the fight were looking for someone specific, and that the fact that person wasn’t there didn’t stop them from throwing punches.
A spokesperson for MSU confirmed the fight but would not reveal if any football players were involved, or if Jenrette and Winston were involved.
The spokesperson said the matter is still under investigation. <!--stopindex-->
