About 12 years ago I lost a close game because the kicker missed a 35 yard FG. I was working for the Post office and the next day I was fuming and telling anyone who would listen to my ranting that " I could make a 35 yard field goal ". Well needless to say my fellow mail carriers would have no part of it so the next Saturday We had a group of about 15 Letters carriers head over to nearby Portland State University football field to watch me make a fool of myself. I was in my mail carrier's uniform with regular postal walking shoes to make matters worse. True story .... I kicked a 35 yard field goal dead center with about 3 feet to spare. I walked off and the group tried in vain for about 10 minutes without anyone else being successful at that distance. I was in my mid 50's at the time. Pure luck I'm sure but I wish I had put some $$ on it as I'm sure my postal buddies would have given me great odds that I couldn't do it !
I would wager a large amount that I can kick a football through a college goal post(23ft-4in) from 25 yards. I wouldn't bet much trying to kick one through an NFL goal post(18ft-6in). Against a full rush(game conditions), I'll pass.
Were you on the clock...if so was the PM there ?
Yes, We were all on the clock and no the Postmaster wasn't there ! I worked at university Station which pretty much carried all the mail for all the downtown Portland business customers. On Saturdays most of the business stops were closed so We always had extra time for such shemanigans. Nowadays however with the shrinking Postal revenues, the bosses have the carriers covering vacant routes on Saturdays. Those were the good old days if you had a business mail route like I did.
One Saturday We actually had Cliffy from Cheers drop by and He gave the bartender $ 200 and sat and drank a few beers with us Real Letter Carriers. He was in town for another appearance and heard that the local pub was having a " Letter Carrier Appreciation Day " and He dropped by. It made the society page of U.S A. Today Newspaper
