I find Sagarin ratings most useful for comparing Strength of Schedule and also comparing Results vs "Top 10" and "Top 30" (college sports) "Top 16" (pro sports), especially for teams in the middle tiers.
Often a team in a middle tier will have accrued their overall record by winning consistently against lower teams but really struggling against higher ranked teams.
And vice versa. Many teams in the middle seem to get it up and do reasonably well against higher ranked, but then play poorly against teams ranked lower. Their ".500" type record can be misleading.

First saw them in USA Today when I was a teenager and thought they were pretty cool
Heard a few times how his rankings were better at predicting outcomes than the lines for both NFL and NCAA basketball tournament. Then I thought if it was true and continued to be true it would simply be built into the lines and wouldn't be much help -- haven't done as well since people discovered that
