Just bought a new computer. What should be done with the old computer, after getting everything off of it? Are there programs that destroy everything on it? Can you donate it and get a tax deduction?

I Know around here where I live some cities have a recycle drives for computers and they do it about 2 times a year.I would clean the hard drive out of it before you get rid of it and make sure there isnt anything that you dont want anybody to know about you.

You can donate the computer but I dont know what route to take on that for tax deduction

If the processor is fast enough and you've got at least 2MB of RAM (or can expand to that) you might think about wiping the drive, installing TinyXP and hooking it up to your TV for Web viewing.

I've got old computers on both my living room and master bedroom TVs and I really enjoy being able to watch games, fights, etc. that way.

For completely wiping a drive -- either before getting rid of the computer or loading TinyXP -- burn a free copy of Ultimate Boot CD and use one or more of their disk wiping programs.

FW, that is a great question. I'm always afraid of giving or selling my used computer because I'm afraid someone will get my personal info.

I got rid of one about 6 weeks ago. I beat it into little pieces with a softball bat.

Most cities now have recycling centers or "E-recycling" centers. You can drop off old TV's, phone chargers, computers, monitors, basically anything electronic.
