SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Southern California will face Boston College in the Emerald Bowl.

The bowl announced Sunday that the Trojans (8-4) will play the Eagles (8-4) on Dec. 26 at AT&T Park in San Francisco. This marks the first time USC has played in the bowl.

The Trojans had played in a BCS game the past seven years and had hopes to make it back there again this season. But they dropped three of their last five games, including Saturday’s 21-17 loss to Arizona. USC fell out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in eight years after the loss to Wildcats.

“We’re disappointed with the way we played the last half of this season, so the Emerald Bowl gives us a chance to finish the year on a positive note,” coach Pete Carroll said. “We’ll work hard to send our seniors out in the fashion they deserve. And it’ll give our younger players some extra practice time that will pay off in the future.’

Boston College is making its 11th straight bowl appearance. The Eagles are the first team to play in the Emerald Bowl twice, beating Colorado State 35-21 in 2003. Boston College is 8-1 in bowl games this decade.

“We could not be happier with this matchup,” bowl director Gary Cavalli said. “In USC, we have one of the great brands in college football and a program that is almost always in the national championship hunt. In Boston College, we have one of the nation’s premier academic institutions and an overachieving team that overcame a lot of adversity this season.”

They would sell about 100 tickets with these 2 teams, but since it is USC, I expect ticket sales to be around 30, as USC will probably have the other 70 people on their sidelines.

Human nature to pile up on the neighborhood "bully" when he's slipped and fallen on the pavement. Everyone is taking their shots now that the mighty Trojans have fallen.

Wonder how USC will be NEXT year? :think2: Will they be mediocre as they were this year, or will they rebound? :think2:

Boston College has a decent program for a high academic requirement school run by Jesuits. Witness their Bowl record this decade. I saw them play many times as a kid in the early 60s. They are much more competitive these days as one of the contenders in the ACC Atlantic Division.

They overcame a lot this season just to make it to a bowl game.
It started with the loss of 2008 ACC defensive player of the year Mark Herzlich to cancer, but Boston College, despite heading into the season without a quarterback who had ever taken a major college snap, moved to 8-4 with last Saturday’s victory at Maryland.

Key Players.

RB Montel Harris has run for 1,355 yards this season, the sixth-best total in Boston College history. He needs fewer than 100 yards in the bowl game to move up to No. 4 on the all-time list. With 285 carries, he needs 37 in the bowl game to break Derrick Knight’s all-time BC record for carries in a season (321), set in 2003. Harris notched his seventh 100-yard game of the season Saturday, the 12th of his two-year BC career. His 41 carries Saturday tied Fred Willis’ 39-year-old Eagles mark for carries in a game. “I feel great,” he said afterward. “I could go another couple of quarters.” He said he was told by the coaches before the game he would handle most of the work and was the only running back with a carry in the game.

WR Rich Gunnell had five catches Saturday, giving him 54 for the season, tied for ninth on the all-time BC list. His 64 in 2007 are No. 4 on that list. His 175 career catches, with one game left, are second all-time to Pete Mitchell’s 190 (1991-94).

LB Luke Kuechly has 142 tackles in his freshman season, good for seventh on BC’s all-time list. He has 35 tackles the last two games and would need 24 in the bowl game to break the program’s all-time record for tackles in a season, set by Tom McManus in 1991.

Don't sell BC short..They lost to Clemson, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame and North Carolina. They routed MAC Champ Central Michigan a 10 game winner.

No need to pile on the Rubbers, they couldn't give tickets away until about 2003.

I remember going to the Auburn USC game in 2002 and Sun Deck tickets were free.

BC's bowl record is impressive, but a bit misleading.

Because they don't travel well, they tend to be downgraded in the bowl process.

Even when BC wins 8+ games, they usually play lesser bowls (and lesser competition).

Bowls will always ignore BC for the other ACC teams. FSU, Miami, Clemson, NCSU, UNC, GT, VT, and even UVA.
