I found this source very helpful when traveling down through Oregon into California and Nevada. Of course the list is nationwide. Normally all Starbucks have an ATT connection. Not free but every Starbucks inside a Safeway store that I found had free WiFi. Mostly all Public Libraries have free WiFi.

You can get a wireless card from Verizon and possibly others. I had one a few years back that my previous employer bestoyed on me to be in touch all the time.

I've since replaced that with the Blackberry from Verizon. Does most everything I need.

An increasing number of notable retailers are providing free wifi access

I noticed the other day the Barnes&Noble store here - which has a coffee bar inside - does that.

Many sports-themed bars do as well. If I was on a trek like yours I would ask management at such places. They'll give you the access code if you are eating/drinking there.

Went to have a sandwich at Panera Bread last month. They advertised free WiFi on the front door. Fired up the laptop, opened a window, and went to bring up "therx.com". The cocksuckers had it blocked, saying that it contained questionable content.

with this device I would be able to access the internet in my car? i dont need to plug into any kind of land lines?

I happen to have the Virgin Mobile wireless, for when I'm on the road.

The reason I got this was, I didn't want to get tied down to a 2 year contract and Pay $39.99-$59.99 a Month.

I paid $149 for mine ( is it really $99 Now ?? ) Oh Well, no big Deal..

Anyway, Best part is...I'm not Always on the Road...So I Only load it when I do.
You can put $20 on the card, and it's good for like 250MB or 30 Days
So if you're Not going to Download Movie/Music, etc or Play Games...It's GREAT !!

AT&T has a feature called "tethering"...which means you have a smart phone with unlimited data...and when you're on the road...you hook this phone to your laptop with an usb cable and you can surf up to 1.5mb speed...

Great idea for occasional trips...

I am from Texas and never had any problems in major towns....I have used it in Vegas, NY, Louisiana etc with no problem....If you plan to travel up the mountains or middle of nowhere...chances are you will get weak or spotty coverage....

The trick is stay close to major highways...there are a lot of cell phone towers along the interstates and you will get good coverage...

not only do most bars , coffee shops, hotels/motels, and most fast food places now-a-days have it, but a lot of businesses have for their security systems and credit card processing. And alot of small businesses set the stuff up themselves and don't pw protect it, as well as most home owners.

you'll be amazed as to how many hot spots you can find, hell you can just drive around neighborhoods and find one.
