MANHATTAN — John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980 as he stood outside his New York City apartment house, the Dakota. Mark David Chapman, a deranged, obsessed “fan,” asked Lennon to autograph an album, then shot him as Lennon started to comply. The man was quickly apprehended by others gathered at the scene. A several-days vigil by hundreds of mourning fans is remembered as candles flickered and “Give Peace a Chance” was heard — a continuing tribute to the musician and songwriter of a generation. John Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, together with New York officials, set up a permanent memorial to her husband — a section of Central Park, opposite the Dakota, named Strawberry Fields.

If memory serves, Howard Cosell broke the story in the middle of Monday Night Football.

Like most other people I suppose, I really liked some Beatle's Tunes while not caring that much for others. Even though Lennon wrote some great great tunes, for some reason he was probably my least favorite of the British Group. Maybe the "Weirdness" of his personal life as portrayed by the media influenced my views early in my life when I could not distinguish fact from fiction. Even though he was not my favorite, I do comprehend fully that his murder was a tragic event in the history of rock music and it's reprocusions crushed his peers and fans.

Completely agree with this. Well said. Good post. Like it or not, Mcartney was the REAL superstar of this band.

In closing, I want to say that "strawberry fields" and " Imagine" are over rated pieces of garbage.

Lennon was certainly the wisest of his famous colleagues and it's clear he outgrew pop rock n roll by at least 1968-1969

Given the strong influence he had on so many Americans and Western Europeans during his last decade of life, his early death represents one of the greatest losses to our world of which I can recall for that era.

Loved Imagine, even if it was a totally Lib song.

Yeah, that Beyonce' video blew away anything the Beatles has ever done.

Just bustin' your chops Rob. I happen to think "Imagine" was overrated too but I enjoyed the Beatles' songs.

hahaha. I know, I know. I did make a little too much of a fuss over that. Guess I was just trying to do my best Kanye impersonation.

I like Sgt. Peppers. Don't really care for much anything else of theirs, so I am not afraid to be critical.

Having said that, it is a shame Lennon is gone and his life was taken so soon. Would be cool to see what he would be doing at this stage of his life musically. My guess : JL would more than likely be a producer of sorts maybe a Brian Eno type working with the U2's and Coldplay's of the music world.
