It's 4:30 pm , still some some daylight left.

I'm pretty sure it was dark at 4:30 a few weeks ago

But the solstice is Dec 21st or thereabouts.

Where am I wrong ?

No! Less hours of daylight from sunrise to sunset until December 21st. Then we will gradually see more daylight

Ted: why do sunrise and sunset become slightly later this time of year ?

The sun is setting later, I'm never up at sunrise....more like noon.

seems to me the sun should rise later, and set earlier with less daylight overall ?

at least I'm not going insane, yet !

The sun is actually setting later, as the days get shorter.

OK

Sunrise and Sunset
Due to the Earth's elliptical orbit and axial tilt, neither the earliest sunset nor the latest sunrise fall exactly on the winter solstice. The earliest sunset occurs earlier than the solstice (by a few days), and the latest sunrise later. For one or two weeks surrounding both solstices, both sunrise and sunset get slightly later or earlier each day. Even on the equator, sunrise and sunset shift several minutes back and forth through the year, along with solar noon. This effect is plotted by an analemma.[5][6]

alot of good info. no the days are not getting longer, actually I see less of the sun this time of the year, so my days are getting shorter in terms of daylight.

I knew the days have to still be getting shorter ( in the Northern hemisphere), but these later sunsets threw me for a loop, I never noticed that before.

I don't get it Bar !

I know it was getting dark earlier a few weeks ago compared to now. I know the days should still be be getting shorter, so it threw me off.

I don't see what clouds have to do with it ?

The sun is rising later and setting later, than a few weeks ago, for a net shorter time of daylight.

I wasn't imagining the later sunset.
