Best way to learn a new language

My new job starts soon and I have to learn french asap. Does any one have any recomendations for any learning resources that worked really well for them?

I am looking for:

1) Best free online web site to teach yourself another language

2) Best books to learn and teach yourself a new language from?

My plan is to hire an assistant to help me with the language for 6 months then be good to go solo by then.

I live in Ontario (mostly english) but my new gig is in Quebec.:think2:

After I learnt the basics of English, the challenge is to increase vocabulary and train your ear.

The best way to do this IMHO is to watch bunches of movies and tv that have close captioned titles, you probably can watch several channels and set the close caption feature on and its free

In other words, if you watch a movie in french......and at the same time you are reading what they are saying....you are guarranteed to know what they said even if you didnt (at first) understand what they were saying and if you dont know a word you can look at the spelling and find out what it means.

immerse yerself in books, movies, culture...be around people that speak it as much as possible..the captions to the movies idea is a very good one...i learned italian and spanish by just being around them as much as possible...it's amazing what u wil pick up being around people that speak nothing but the language u want to learn...no teacher or book is gonna get u there quicker..they might be able to help u conjugate a verb..but they aint gonna help u to ask how to go to the bathroom any faster?....good luck on yer quest....

You can download Rosetta Stone on torrents or better yet using newsgroups.

I tried using it for German and it was pretty good. It has voice recognition and all that good stuff.
