Stay tuned.......

TAMPA, Fla. -- University of South Florida coach Jim Leavitt grabbed a player by the throat then struck him twice in the face during halftime of the Bulls' Nov. 21 game with Louisville, the player's father, his high school coach and five members of USF's football program told FanHouse.

The incident involved sophomore walk-on Joel Miller that stemmed from Leavitt being upset over Miller's first-half mistake on special teams, according to witnesses. Leavitt, who was out of town Monday recruiting, would not comment specifically about the incident when reached on his cell phone.

"I'll visit with you about recruiting," Leavitt said. "All the stuff we do in there [the locker room] ... I'll visit with you about recruiting.

"Things that happen or don't happen usually are kept within the team -- whether they happen or don't happen. If you want to talk about recruiting, I'll talk about recruiting."

According to the five witnesses -- USF players and staff members -- Leavitt was pacing in the Raymond James Stadium locker room at halftime when he walked about 10 feet to the locker where Miller was sitting without his helmet. Leavitt then grabbed Miller by the throat and hit him twice in the face with his hand.

"You do something like that [on the street], you put them in jail," Paul Miller, Joel's father and a former Tampa police officer, told FanHouse. "Somewhere [Leavitt] crossed the line."

Coach Leavitt's antics have grown as tiresome as his team's mid season swoons and total lack of discipline.

He is an arogant, unhinged loose cannon and his days are numbered no matter what the investigation uncovers.

FWIW, Leavitt and Mark Mangino were assistants together from 1991-95 at the Kansas State program.

Something tells me that the actions by Mangino and Leavitt are quite common at major CFB programs. Only difference is the players they abused don't have the mental toughness to take it and decided "let's go to the media and make a big deal out of it".

Coaches want to win, players want to win. Emotions always run high.

Do Pete Carroll and Jim Tressel strike you as guys that punch their players?

There are always going to be exceptions and "nice guys" who are head coaches, but almost every staff has at least one or two bad apples on it.

It's tough to win at team sports if you don't lay down discipline. If you neglect to show your superiority, they won't respect you which causes you to rely completely on out-scheming the opposition / having more talent then the opponent.

Take Cincinnati Basketball as an example. They have a very talented roster with enough firepower to be a Top-25 team, but Mick Cronin's strategy appears to be no different then Huggie Bear, which is "let's put 5 guys on the court who are more athletic than the opposition but don't play together and hope it works".

Just like having children. You have to hit them, ground them, etc. or they will never make it on the outside world. They need to be able to tolerate the employee who next to you in the cubicle who doesn't work nearly as hard but gets the same paycheck when they are in their zone.

Tough love FTW. I wouldn't be the a-hole that I am today if it wasn't for my location (Southeast Michigan) and my parents.

these are the kind of coaches i would want to play for. Bob Knight....sign me up. Jim Leavitt....sign me up. Too many pussy ass, spoiled kids playing these days. Coach needs to choke out a kid every once in a while to get a point across....if yelling and berating them doesn't work and they keep doing the same shit, then choke em out and send a message!

Word out this morning is that the father is retracting his earlier claim and says it may have been "misunderstood".

Don't have a supporting link at this moment....caught it on the Cowherd show about 1pm

Im not a huge leavitt fan, but i do reside here in florida and im a hs coach, and have heard him speak several times at coaches clinics. I will tell you this, what he has done for that program is quite amazing. When USF started their program, some of the original staff were as follows:

1) mark canales - current Ocoord for USF
2) rick kravitz - nc state ( i believe)
3) earl lane - LSU dline coach (coached for nat'l championship LSU)
4) mark stoops - former DC for arizona wildcats. Now new FSU dcoord.
5) calvin magee - current Ocoord for michigan and asst. head coach.

This is what they worked out of in the mid 90's
