Question : How to measure a movies success

Every year it seems there is a movie that ranks among the "highest gross" ever. Well no shit. Prices go up every year so fewer tickets bought can still break records. I want to know if there is an industry measurement of tickets purchased to see a movie. And forget about opening weekends. That would be a measurement of the advertising success. I'd like to see an all time movie ranking based on total tickets purchased to see that movie in a theatre.

yeah it would be kinda cool if they would just do a head count, but i guess since the measurement has been ticket sales for a long time they just stick to it.

I do think sometimes when i see those polls some do use adjusted for inflation numbers, but some probably don't.

like this list for just USA sales lists at the bottom that it is NOT adjusted for inflation.

Hard to believe Shrek 2 is 4th all time. Good for them I guess.
