The New York Yankees have acquired right-hander Javier Vazquez from the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Melky Cabrera and left-hander Mike Dunn, sources told ESPN The Magazine senior writer Buster Olney.

The Braves also are sending right-hander Boone Logan to the Yankees, sources said, and the Yankees are sending the Braves $500,000 in the transaction.

Vazquez, with a 15-10 record, ranked second in the National League last season with 238 strikeouts and sixth in ERA at 2.87 as the No. 2 starter in the rotation. This is his second time around with the Yankees, having pitched in New York in 2004, when he went 14-10 with a 4.91 ERA.

This move opens the door for outfield moves for both teams. The Yankees now are expected to explore both the free-agent and trade markets for a leftfielder. But they've continued to portray themselves as uninterested in anyone in the price range of Matt Holliday, Jason Bay or Johnny Damon.

One name that has been on their radar screen is Mark DeRosa, whose $6 million asking price is in the dollar area they appear willing to allocate.

The Braves free up somewhere in the neighborhood of $9 million in this trade -- shedding Vazquez's $11.5 million salary, minus the $3 million or so Cabrera figures to earn via arbitration, and getting the $500,000 in cash from the Yankees.

They're expected to use that money to add an outfield bat. Among the rumored possibilities: Bay and Damon, although both have been looking for more than the Braves would prefer to spend.

Im a braves fan, and im just not sure about this trade yet. Yes, vazquez was a stud pitcher this year who could have very well been in the cy young talk. He pitches a ton of innings and is just damn solid.

Melky is a good outfielder, who comes up with clutch hits. I hate the yankees, but have always liked melky for some reason. I dont have any clue on mike dunn? Maybe a yankees fan can help me out here. Ive heard he is a pretty good talent.

Up in the air about it. I think braves are freeing up payroll and will try to strike another trade for a hitter. Hopefully they can swing something good for a good bat. Who knows

As recently as the last few days ago a majority of Yankees fans likely haven’t heard of Mike Dunn, which is reasonable since he only pitched 4 innings for the Yankees this year. In the Yankees 3 way trade for Curtis Granderson, the Detroit Tigers originally wanted Mike Dunn, however, the Yankees did not want to trade him for Granderson.

If you have been following Zell’s and read our forums, you would know that I am high as a kite on Dunn and so are the Yankees. Dunn is a 24 year old power lefty that throws a mid-90’s fastball and also features a slider and change up.

Dunn was originally drafted in 2003 by the Houston Astros, but did not sign and thus was drafted as the 999th overall pick in the 2004 draft by the New York Yankees. Originally an outfielder by trade, the Yankees in their infinite wisdom converted him into a pitcher because he couldn’t hit himself out of a wet paper bag. He did not make his pitching debut until 2006 in the Gulf Coast League. In his 4 years in the Minor Leagues, he had an era of 3.62 in 375.1 innings with 390 K’s with 166 BB’s. In 2008, Dunn was added to the 40-man roster to be protected from those filthy prospect hungry teams in the Rule 5 Draft.

A lock for 3,000 K's

THIS SHOULD HELP HIS HOF CHANCES...

Not a big game pitcher. That's why the Yankees got rid of him the first time and why the White Sox dumped him. He can't pitch himself out of jams. If he pitches for the Nats he would be lights out but put him on a playoff caliber team and he has no heart.

No chance in hell of him making the Hall of Fame, 3000 K's or not.

We're finally at the point in time where some of these automatic entry stats aren't going to guarantee anything.

He will eat a lot of innings for the Yanks, though.

The first thing I thought of when I heard this deal was that Damon would re-sign with the Yanks now.
