Mayweather-Pacquiao appears dead over drug testing issue, and there's blame to go around

By David Mayo | The Grand Rapids Press

You might think someone will blink, and that either Floyd Mayweather’s camp will relent on this blood feud, or Manny Pacquiao’s camp will relent and allow a few pinpricks so everyone can bleed money.

Of course, that assumes common sense prevails, which isn’t always the case in boxing.

Money usually does prevail, however, and if Mayweather-Pacquiao actually does disintegrate over a disagreement in how to administer random drug tests, it would be a bigger upset than the night Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson.

Happy Holidays, sports fans. The prettiest package under your tree just got smashed to smithereens.

And the discussion of who did the smashing is well under way

At issue is that the Mayweather camp wanted to ensure that Pacquiao doesn’t use performance-enhancing drugs via Olympic-style, random blood testing, administered by either the U.S. Anti-Doping Association, or an independent laboratory using the same technology.

Pacquiao agreed to two blood tests -- one at the beginning of training camp in January, then again at the fight site -- and urine sampling in between.

When neither side would budge, the accusations flew.

Pacquaio’s promoter, Bob Arum, and trainer, Freddie Roach, claim Mayweather is looking for a way out of the fight. Mayweather, in a statement, said he merely wants to ensure a level playing field, while his adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, said he can’t believe Pacquiao would let the fight fall apart over blood testing, and his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., said this validates his performance-enhancing charges against Pacquiao.

At the core of this fallout were two egregious demands, one by each side, that were the final sticking points in a fight which had an agreed-upon date (March 13), site (MGM Grand in Las Vegas), weight limit (147 pounds) and financial split (50-50):

• One, Pacquiao demanded a usurious $10 million payment to the offended fighter if either man came in even a fraction heavier than 147 pounds. That demand was based on Mayweather paying $600,000 to Juan Manuel Marquez after weighing 146 pounds for a September fight.

Of course, that ignores that the real weight limit for Mayweather-Marquez was, in fact, 147, but with a contractual stipulation for a $300,000 payment for each pound heavier than 144. Mayweather abided by the weight restrictions in a screwball contract, just as he has for all his professional fights. Faced with Pacquiao’s enormous penalty requirement, Mayweather agreed.

• Two, Mayweather demanded both fighters submit to USADA-style random blood testing, obviously based on the performance-enhancement charges first raised by his father.

Pacquiao has passed urine screens -- including for steroids -- in all of his previous post-fight testing in Nevada, and has complied completely with that state commission’s policy. Keith Kizer, the commission executive director, said that body would continue to enforce its own testing, but that additional testing could be negotiated by the parties.

Faced with Mayweather’s over-the-top drug-testing demand, Pacquiao refused and, as of now, the fight will not happen.

The concern in the Mayweather camp is that if Pacquiao only submits to blood testing in January and March, he would have two months to engorge performance-enhancers that can be masked from urine detection -- primarily HGH and the synthetic blood-boosting hormone EPO -- but easily be detected in blood sampling.

The concern on Pacquiao’s side is that Mayweather’s demand is nothing but a way to “harass” its fighter, Arum said. Roach claimed Pacquiao would feel “weakened” by frequent blood testing.

Both concerns can be dismissed as absolutely ludicrous: Pacquiao supporters say Mayweather is trying to weasel out of the fight or create a built-in excuse if he loses; Mayweather supporters say it’s absurd to think a little drawn blood would weaken anyone and Pacquiao’s non-compliance merely heightens speculation about him.

Whether the fight can be pulled back together will require concession, although this issue has been on the table two weeks, and neither side has blinked.

Time is running out.

The fight looks dead. And regardless whom you support, you can find plenty of blame to spread around.

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao Fight On Life Support: The mega fight that would have been an instant classic between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is on life support. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum says that Manny Pacquiao will not fight Mayweather unless he relents on his demands for Olympic style drug testing. Pacquiao has never tested positive for any performance enhancing drugs under the standard urine tests but those tests can be tricked with the use of cleansing agents.

The Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao Odds have Mayweather as a -130 Boxing Betting favorite at SBGGLOBAL.COM.

Pacquiao did agree however to take the same drug test that professional football and baseball players take. Their have been plenty of whispers in boxing circles that Pacquiao’s career has been aided by the use of performance enhancing drugs but nothing has been proven. Pacquiao began his career as a scrawny 106 Lb. fighter at the age of 16 years old but now has the appearance of Bruce Lee at 145 Lbs. The fight was probably going to be the richest in boxing history with both fighters likely to take home $50+ million. Arum said if a deal isn’t signed by Thursday that the fight will not take place and they would search for another opponent

It's a smoke screen, nothing more. If anything Mayweather needs this fight more than Paquiao.

It'll happen.

This plays into MoneyMays favor. Gives him extra time for this big fight. Maybe June 2010?

Pretty boy is trying to change the rules. Remember the Nevada Boxing Committee sets the rules. It is stated that a Urine test is the policy. It is a shame this crap is happening as this is a HUGE fight. I hear PPV prices are going to range in the $70-$100 .

Thought about that too. Moreso, funny how all the antics and talking is coming from Mayweather's camp. A clear sign of insecurity. And look I understand the promotion side of the sport. (e.g. hype, marketing, etc) but for PB to be (1) insinuating steroids (2) blood test (3) calling Manny out accusing him of letting his camp doing the talking, shows an awful lot of pomp and chest pounding for someone who's supposed to be the undisputed. Floyd knows Pac has all the momentum and public's attention right now and his insecurity is showing.

this has been brought up in the past about manny using peds... floyd has said a long long long time ago that manny uses them. he should do the blood test because he is passing with the urine screens

all the pro-manny backers just close their eyes to the simple truth:

their phillipino hero is nothing more than a stone cold cheat and fraud

-mayweather's camp has asked for this type of comprehensive and random testing from the beginning (using the US anti-doping agency)
-manny is willing to take urine tests (b/c its easy to hide certain PEDs with masking agents and certain banned substances are only found through blood testing)
-Manny only willing to take blood testing if given the specific dates they will be adminstered and not within 30 days of the fight (duh, otherwise he'd get caught out in the open; this way he can clean his cycle of steroid use in time for the appointed tests)
-It's not just Mayweather who's made this claim in the past; other boxers not even in Manny's weight class have spoken out publicly in the past they are positive he is on PEDs (Cintron for one on ringtalk radio)
-manny's superstitious about needles? yet he's got tattoos up the wazoo on his body; the largest of which took anywhere from 6-8hrs to complete
-Arum knows he's got a corrupt fighter and trying to switch the blame on Mayweather, talking as if they are going to drain out gallons of blood when we are talking about less than a tablespoon from the random blood tests.

Take the test and get in the ring clean and see who's the joke then, manny.

go read ringtalk or maxboxing, all the real boxing experts and fanatics know exactly what's up and that's that pac-man is nothing more than a roided up cheater who's cheated his way to the top.

It's a lose-lose for manny; he refuses and anybody with a brain knows he's a cheater; he agrees and has to fight his first fight without the aid of PEDs in the last several years against his strongest competition ever.

Lost in all of this is Miguel Cotto; cheated by Maragarito and most likely got in the ring against an enhanced fighter in Manny.

Oscar weighs in (the man who was beaten Mosley who admitted he was on roids before their 2nd fight and who easily beat the BS urine tests the Nevada Athletic Commission administered):

http://www.ringtv.com/blog/1457/de_la_hoya_blog_pacquiaomayweather_impasse/

Oscar De La Hoya gives his take on Manny Pacquiao’s refusal to take Olympic-style random blood tests, which is threatening to scuttle a pending fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13. Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, has said that the fighter is willing to take blood tests three months before the fight, 30 days before the fight and after the fight but not random tests. Pacquiao doesn’t want to be tested close to fight because, he says, it weakens him. The sides appear to be considering a compromise that would involve a cutoff date for testing – maybe 3-5 days before the fight – to solve the impasse. De La Hoya has fought two fighters found to have taken performance enhancing drugs – Shane Mosley and Fernando Vargas. He also fought Pacquiao.

First of all, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency agreed that they won’t take blood from the fighters 48 hours before the fight as some people seem to think. They’re going to take only a few tablespoons through random testing in the three months leading up to the fight.

If Pacquiao, the toughest guy on the planet, is afraid of needles and having a few tablespoons of blood drawn from his system, then something is wrong. The guy has tattoos everywhere; he’s tattooed from top to bottom. You’re telling me he’s afraid of needles?

And the idea that urine tests can detect HGH [Human Growth Hormone] is wrong. I talked to Travis Tygart, CEO of the USADA. He testified before Congress that anyone who says HGH can be detected by a urine test is mistaken. It can only be detected by a blood test.

So you have to do the blood work. If Pacquiao doesn’t want to do this and risk a possible $40 million payday because he’s afraid of needles or believes he’ll be weakened by blood tests, then that raises question marks.

Now I have to wonder about him. I’m saying to myself, “Wow. Those Mosley punches, those Vargas punches and those Pacquiao punches all felt the same.” I’m not saying yes or no [about whether Pacquiao might be taking performance-enhancing drugs]; I’m just saying that now people have to wonder: “Why doesn’t he want to do this? Why is it such a big deal.”

A lot of eyebrows have been raised. This is not good at all.

I believe Mayweather wants to do the right thing, to get tested properly. He’s not doing it to harass Pacquiao; that’s garbage. I would say to Pacquiao: “Do the test. Do it because it’s only a couple of tablespoons. Needles don’t hurt. Just look away when they put the needle in your arm.” He’ll probably lose more blood in the fight than the blood being drawn for the test.

And do it because we as a sport are in a unique situation. We can paint ourselves as the cleanest sport by doing this test. Why don’t you want to do it?

C’mon. It’s only a little bit of blood. If you have nothing to hide, then do the test.

The excuses out of the manny camp are just lame and it's obvious to anybody with a brain he's been using PEDs as he's been moving up in weight classes.

LOL @ wanting a 30 day period of non-testing, b/c steroids can be flushed out in a 10-21 day period, while their effects last much much longer. Lost all respect for what I thought was a good trainer in Freddie Roach too.
