Channel 4 sportscaster
George Michael.

George Michael, dean of Washington sportscasters, has died after a long battle with cancer. Michael covered sports at WRC-TV (Channel 4) for 28 years until resigning in 2008 in response to budget cuts.
WRC released the following statement about Michael:

"George Michael was our friend and colleague for more than 25 years. He was a dynamic force around our newsroom and in the entire Washington area.
George was a pioneer in sports broadcasting. He was a gifted interviewer, a master storyteller, and one of the hardest working journalists out there.
His syndicated show -- The George Michael Sports Machine -- launched in the early 1980s and provided local broadcast stations throughout the country with an alternative to ESPN's SportsCenter and CNN's once-popular highlight show featuring Nick Charles and Fred Hickman.

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has issued a statement regarding Michael's passing. "George was the consummate reporter and a valuable friend," Snyder said. "I doubt we'll ever again see a sports reporter who was so admired by the people he covered. He loved his family, he loved sports, and he loved his work. His wife Pat and the rest of his family are in my prayers, and in the thoughts of the entire Redskins organization."

When they show a film of his life at his eulogy, I wonder if they will have a pre-recorded sound track that doesn't quite fit the action.

I grew up in the DC area and will always remember him and Sonny broadcasting live from Redskins training camp every summer. It was really great television. Always brash and honest reporting.

Here is a great quote I read from some of the DC blogs.

"Caps Owner Ted Leonsis just sent via email his thoughts on legendary sportscaster George Michael, who died this morning:

First minute after the initial press conference announcing that we had bought the Washington Capitals; George Michael walks up to me--slaps me on the back and says... "Let me tell you how it works in this town -- you talk to me first -- then later it is ok to talk to Tony (Kornheiser) over there. As long as you play by the rules -- things will work out fine. By the way -- nice tie"."
