Is there a defensive player in The NFL more valuable than Pittsburgh's Troy Palamalu?

PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu practiced in a limited role for the first time in seven weeks, although it seems unlikely he will play Sunday in Miami.

Polamalu has missed 10 full games and most of two others with a pair of left knee injuries. He hasn't played since Nov. 15 against Cincinnati because of a sprained posterior cruciate ligament.

Polamalu called his current layoff "frustrating," but said it would be difficult to play after only a few days of practice following such a long time off.

According to Polamalu, his knee is still healing. He did not run at close to full speed and he appeared tentative doing some work.

Players such as Ray Lewis, Champ Bailey, DeMarcus Ware, Jared Allen, Kevin Williams, Charles Woodsen, Darren Sharper, Assante Samuels. Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Elvis Dumervil, Darelle Revis, Ed Reed and Brian Dawkins (I am sure I overlooked a few others) come to mind as defensive game changers but IMHO none of them possess quite the impact that Palamalu brings to a defense when he is healthy...

You can't compare any defensive players loss to the loss of the top tier of QBs around the league (Curtis Painter in for Peyton Manning anyone) but in Palamalu's case he is the defensive equivalent to any of the top QBs around the league. In other words his team has no sub that can keep his defense at the same level of play they had with Troy.
--------------------------
While we are at it lets talk Quarterbacks.

My top five QBs right now on the eve of week 17.

1. Peyton Manning, Drew Brees -- Tie
2. Philip Rivers
3. Tom Brady
4. Aaron Rodgers

Honorable mention but shaky of late: Brett Farve
Dangerous but also cumbustable: Donavan McNabb
Potential to join top tier group: Matt Schaub, Big Ben.
Up and comers: Matt Ryan, Tony Romo, Eli Manning and Joe Flacco
Solid but past their prime Vets:Kurt Warner, Carson Palmer, Matt Hasselback
Journeymen: Kyle Orton, David Garrard, Marc Bulger
Who Knows: Vince Young, Jay Cutler. Chad Henne, Mark Sanchez, Jason Campbell, Matthew Stafford, and Matt Cassel.
Washed up: Jake Delhomme and Kerry Collins.

I am sure there are some sleepers waiting as back-ups to show their talent but until they do they remain unknown.

Ready to make the jump from college to pro are some potential stars, some are underclassmen who are coming out early to avoid the potential rookie cap that may be part of the 2011 players contract.

Looking to play on Sundays:

Jimmy Clausen, Jake Locker, Jevan Snead, Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, Tony Pike, Sam Bradford, Ryan Mallett, Christian Ponder and Jarett Brown among a few others who figure to get drafted in the top 100/150 players selected (if they come out early).

Clausen has the best chance of going in the top 5 depending upon what teams with early picks need..The Jaguars would love a shot at drafting the hugely popular in Florida Tim Tebow where he could be brought along slowly behind David Garrard.

Just my 2 cents for the day....

No, I can't think of one defensive player more valuable to his team in the capacity of T.P. is for the Steelers.

Reves for the Jets?

Woodson for the Packers?

Urlacher for the Bears?

I can not think of one that has effected that team as much as this guy did if he is in for even 5 of those games they win at least 2 and instead of being stuck on the couch sucking ass a home they would make the playoffs

No sarcasm whatsoever..........I can't think of anyone even close to T.P. then the guys I listed.........and they are not really close(although Woodson is having one helluva season for GB).

I'm sure there are others that one would come to my mind if I would consider this for awhile(RAY LEWIS, GERALD ALLEN just came to mind).

Stacks on deck

Who Knows: Vince Young, Jay Cutler. Chad Henne, Mark Sanchez, Jason Campbell, Matthew Stafford, and Matt Cassel.

This group under the category of who knows is a bunch of QBs that could go either way over the next year or two as it looks like they will be given the opportunity to lead teams from mediocrity to a higher echelon of playoff contender if they are able to perform on a level that will assure them secruity as the no doubt about it I'm the starter status ala players like Big Ben or Drew Brees etc....

Recent examples of this, is this is my team QBs like Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning and Tony Romo. These are players who have won starting jobs on teams by making their teams threats to win any game they are in during the last year or so.

The Peyton Mannings, Bradys, Rothlisbergers and McNabbs have been playing at that level for several years each.

Eli Manning however and the Giants themselves after winning the SB two years ago have to re-tool different areas of their team before The Giants can return to top contender status in the NFC East. Right now The Giants have lost ground to both the Eagles and Cowboys within their Division.

Vince Young most definitely has won the job at Tennessee but the jury is still out if he can become a playoff caliber QB. Which is why I have him under the who knows category.. His future is bright if he can produce.

Right now the most promising QB in football is Philip Rivers given the talent he has around him. Hopefully HC Norv Turner doesn't do anything to destroy team unity. Charger fans should start to be concerned about LT's career winding down as he will enter his 10th season next year (a lot for a RB).

I like the Chargers to win it all this year...If I were coaching the Pats I would not be bothered at all if I ended up the 4th seed in the AFC in order to draw the Colts in the 2nd round (assuming I win the Wild Card game) rather than ending up with a trip to San Diego in two weeks that is in store for the 3 seed. Of course that might be just postponing the inevitable if the Pats beat the Colts in the Lucas Oil Stadium (something they should have done already this season).

Since Polamalu can (and does) make the rest of Pittsburgh's DBs look like passable NFL players, he is the greatest DB of all-time.

I disagree with Urlacher. Most lb's are as good as the line in front of him. Now Revis and Woodson, I agree with. The DB from Oakland also.

Jairus Byrd for the Bills is well on his way for the S position to have a great career!! He may blow Polamalu away if he can stay injury free

I left Urlacher and Sanders off because they have been hurt. The list I posted in post #1.
