Casino Dealer School to Open in Cleveland Next Spring

After Ohio voters overwhelming approved a measure to bring casinos to the state, many residents have been flocking to Michigan for training - where Indian casinos have been around since the early 1990's and Detroit casinos for a little over a decade. Students in the classes are hoping that the training will give them an edge over other applicants when the casinos finally open in Ohio, which is expected to happen by 2012.
The ABC School of Bartending and Casino College in southeastern Michigan trains students how to deal cards, manage a game of blackjack, count poker chips and other skills needed to work in a casino. They have a bartending school in Columbus and plan to add casino courses to that school, as well as open a new school in Cleveland next spring.
With the high unemployment rate in the region, the casinos offer a chance at gaining employment. And with a majority of the jobs promised to be granted to Ohioans, classes that give one the skills to work in a casino will undoubtedly provide an edge.
In November 2009, Ohio voters approved a state constitutional amendment to allow for casinos to be built in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo.

The developers of Cleveland’s $600 million casino have completed the purchase of land for the site.
Cleveland real estate giant Forest City Enterprises Inc.http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus...-casino-sells-for-85m.html#bizWatch-infoPopup (NYSE:FCEA) Tuesday said Rock Ohio Caesars Cleveland LLC closed on the purchase of 16 acres and air rights adjacent to its Tower City Center complex downtown. The sticker price was $85 million, $11 million of which was paid this week with the balance set to be paid through 2012.
Rock is the development arm of Cleveland Cavaliershttp://www.bizjournals.com/columbus...-casino-sells-for-85m.html#bizWatch-infoPopup owner Dan Gilbert, who’s also behind the casino under development in Cincinnati.
Wyomissing, Pa.-based Penn National Gaming Inc.http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus...-casino-sells-for-85m.html#bizWatch-infoPopup (NASDAQ:pENN) is building casinos in Columbus and Toledo after voters in 2009 approved building four in the state.
One crucial detail sets the Cleveland casino apart: A projected mid-2013 opening date that will come after the other casinos’ 2012 openings. Gilbert pushed back the opening last year, when he also struck an agreement in principle on a multi-year lease for space at the nearby Higbee Building high-rise, also owned by Forest City. Plans could call for jump-starting a “phase one” casino that would operate while the permanent site is being built.
