BAY’S SLUMP CONTINUES
Manuel started Angel Pagan in left field to give Jason Bay a breather, with Bay in the midst of a dismal stretch at the plate. He ended up using Bay as a pinch hitter with two outs in the ninth inning, and Bay grounded out to end the game.
Bay’s numbers are ugly across the board. In his first 12 games as a Met, he’s batting .217 with no home runs. He has as many RBI as Alex Cora (2). He has almost twice as many strikeouts (18) as hits (10). You get the idea.
“I’m living what you guys are watching,” Bay said. “It’s one of those things where timing-wise, I’m late on fastballs early. On breaking balls, I’m just kind of in that in-between spot. ... It’s just kind of been like that for the last week or so.”
Manuel said Bay has historically been a streaky hitter and thinks the Mets just need to give him time to work out of it.
Still, this is the worst Bay has been through the first 12 games of any season in his major-league career. His average was lower (.213) through the first 12 games of 2007, but even then he had two homers and six RBI.
Now, he’s struggling with a new team after signing a four-year,
$66 million contract in the offseason.
“I’ve gone through these stretches before,” Bay said. “Obviously, at the very beginning of the year, everything gets magnified. A new place, the team has struggled a little bit, it makes it a little bit tougher, but I’m confident with the guy I am. You just have to go out there and keep battling and know that it’s going to turn around.”
