This company provides a variety of solutions that address your question.

This link is the product I personally purchased last year and it hooks up my 5 year old PC to my 5 year old television using the S-cable connections. It also has other options which I'm sure would connect later models of both PCs/laptops and televisions.

Surf to their home page and you'll see a variety of products that are reasonably priced. Compare them to your own personal needs and enjoy.

Shipping for my purchase was under a week, solid.

It depends on your laptop. Each manufacturer has different key combinations to switch from laptop only to laptop+VGA to VGA only. You should see a picture of a monitor on one of you function keys.

Mine uses Fn and F10. I hold down the Fn key and press the F10 key and let up on both. That switches video modes.
