Iowa men's basketball: These Hawkeyes play Tuesday, too
Updated 5:46 pm
Champaign, Ill. — Coach Todd Lickliter knows his Iowa basketball team will be flying under the radar Tuesday.
“I don’t think there’s any question about that,’’ Lickliter said.
The Hawkeyes play Illinois at 8 p.m. in Assembly Hall. The game will be televised by the Big Ten Network. The Iowa football team will be playing Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl at the same time on Fox.
“I know that Hawkeye fans, they love all their sports,’’ Lickliter said. “They’ll be pulling for us, whether they’re watching or not. We’re trying to get to the point where we’re getting the same kind of enthusiasm and support (as football). But no matter what, in these situations, what are you going to do? Maybe they’ll record it.’’
Iowa athletic officials asked the Big Ten to consider changing the time of tipoff. But the fact that it’s a weekday game, and on the road, as well as the implications of trying to adjust the television schedule, made it impossible for a change to be made.
Iowa’s football team will be playing for an 11th victory against Georgia Tech. The Hawkeye basketball team is 5-9 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten Conference play.
“I think it’s too bad our fans have to choose, but I’m not competing with Kirk (Ferentz) in any way,’’ Lickliter said of the Iowa football coach. “He’s earned the support, his team has earned it, and I don’t blame them (for watching football).’’
Illinois, 9-5 and 1-0, will be a formidable foe for Lickliter’s team. All five starters are averaging double figures offensively for coach Bruce Weber.
“A positive is that four of our losses were by a total of 11 points, and we led in every game we’ve lost,’’ Weber said. “We beat three Top 25 teams and we’re 1-0 in the Big Ten.’’
In one of those victories against a rated foe, Illinois came back from a 23-point second-half deficit to win at No. 18 Clemson, 76-74. The Illini came back from a 21-point first-half deficit Saturday before losing in overtime to Gonzaga at the United Center in Chicago, Ill., 85-83.
“Two of the most impressive comebacks I’ve seen by a team since I’ve been coaching,’’ Lickliter said.
Iowa self-destructed in an 86-74 home loss to Minnesota Saturday, turning the ball over 25 times. The Gophers scored 45 points off those turnovers.
“Every guy took a turn, or two turns, or three turns, of basically panicking and making mistakes,’’ Lickliter said. “As competitors, we’ll get better because we won’t accept what has happened. I expect people to extend their defense against us and we’ll just have to be able to adjust and handle it.’’=============================
QUITE A BIG LINE, have they assumed Iowa will mail it in or are they always this bad and Illinois this good in a conf game????
