Mike Hlas the long time Iowa Sports Columnist for the Cedar Rapids Gazette www.gazetteoneline.com today said that the Orange Bowl to be played tonight between Iowa and Georgia Tech is a chance for the Hawkeyes to define their future.
I could not agree more.
In college football there are marquis programs and solid programs. This is the difference between schools like Iowa, Wisconsin, Cal, and Arizona and the big boys. We win our share of games and are always tough but in the end the Iowa's of the world end up in the Capital One Bowl ranked 5 or 7 while the big boys play for everything.
A win tonight over Georgia Tech in a major bowl will change all of that. Hayden Fry Iowa's legendary coach never won a Rose Bowl. Kirk Ferentz has not won a BCS game either and tonight he can ascend above Hayden's ghost and become an elite coach and move our program forward.
I have been reading allot of smack about Iowa on line. The fact is that Iowa is not flashy but it is solid and I think that the fact that it will be 36 degrees in Miami tonight will help. Georgia Tech will fall to Iowa 21-16 and Iowa will be ranked in the top 5 next year looking forward to having Penn State, Ohio State and Wisconsin at home are the stars aligning?

Boise will be ranked ahead of Iowa next year in the preseason polls and finish ahead of them in November...take that to the bank...

Agree with your first assumption, and probably your second one also because of Iowa's superior schedule next year compared to that of Boise State's.

A couple months ago I stated that Iowa may start the season ranked #1, but NO WAY that will occur now as they are having two NON-seniors and possibly a third player declare themselves eligible for the upcoming NFL DRAFT.

MY CURRENT 2010 PRESEASON RANKINGS........

1. ALABAMA
2. OHIO STATE
3. BOISE STATE
4t. OREGON
4t. TEXAS
4t. OKLAHOMA
4t. IOWA

I do not know what Boise States schedule entails next season, but Iowa will be playing EIGHT teams that played in Bowls this past season, so my guess is that it will quite easily be a way, way tougher schedule then that of Boise State's.

With the departure of two or three non-seniors, Iowa will have a very tough road to surpass the accomplishments of this years squad, which included a BCS bowl win and a #7 final ranking in the both the coaches and AP polls.

You guys are putting Iowa too high. 10-15 seems about right. Their Orange Bowl win was nice but let's not get too carried away here.

They finished at #7 and have practically everyone back next season, why and how could they not be in the top eight?
