Never heard of this before. I guess it has been going on for awhile.

Basically the NBA picks a game for extra security. Not quite as bad as the airport, but fans must pass through metal detectors. They will even have some roaming guards pulling people aside to give them a once over. I feel safer already.

In light of recent events, one should probably wear clean underwear if attending one of these games.

I really doubt any players are going to put up with this BS. Muggers and thieves are going to have a heyday when the game is over.

Tonight's Trail Blazers game to feature added security, delays at entrances

If you’re attending tonight’s Trail Blazers game against the Memphis Grizzlies, be forewarned: There will be an increase in security and longer-than-expected delays while entering the Rose Garden.

The Blazers have randomly selected tonight’s game against the Grizzlies to fulfill a new NBA security guideline requiring fans to pass through metal detectors before entering arenas. Most Rose Garden entrances will have airport-style walkthrough metal detectors and some security personnel will carry metal detecting hand wands.

This is the first of several games this season in which the Blazers will feature the added security, adhering to an NBA mandate that was established before the 2009-10 season.

“It’s just an opportunity for the NBA and their teams to provide enhanced security screening and procedures for protections of its guests and staff and players,” said Chris Oxley, general manager of the Rose Quarter. “We’re not responding to any particular threat nor do we have any intelligence that’s created a concern for us to do this specifically for tonight.”

For years, the Blazers have screened random fans with hand wands, but this is the first time since 2003 they will screen every fan that enters the arena. Despite how it appears, the added security has nothing to do with the recent Gilbert Arenas gun situation or a fear or a terrorist plot. Every arena in the NBA is required to add the stricter security at random games throughout the season.

The Blazers are advising fans to arrive earlier than normal to the Rose Garden to help alleviate delays.
