Rogers arrested after passing out

NOVI, Mich. -- Police say ex-Detroit Lions and Michigan State receiver Charles Rogers has been arrested after apparently drinking too much and passing out at a Mexican restaurant.

He's scheduled to appear Wednesday in district court.

Novi Deputy Chief Tom Lindberg said Wednesday that Rogers was arrested at the suburban Detroit restaurant Tuesday afternoon on a warrant for disobeying a sobriety court order. Lindberg says Rogers was visibly intoxicated Tuesday and was taken to a hospital.

A police source said Rogers was taken into custody at about 3:15 p.m. ET after employees were unable to rouse him and feared he may have had a heart attack, the Detroit News reported.

"We were called to the restaurant on a medical run and he was taken to Providence Park Hospital for observation," Lindberg said, according to the report. He did not disclose the nature of the medical problem.

The 28-year-old Saginaw native and No. 2 NFL draft pick in 2003 pleaded guilty in September to impaired driving and re-entered a sobriety court program, which involves intensive counseling and testing. In that case, he was arrested after he was found "non-responsive behind the wheel" of a vehicle that was still running, in gear and in a left-turn lane, authorities said.

Earlier in 2008 he had served a 30-day jail sentence, with credit for 15 days, instead of staying in an intensive counseling program after violating probation in a domestic violence case.

Rogers was suspended by the Detroit Lions for substance abuse in 2005 and released the next year. The team says he must repay two-thirds of a $9.1 million bonus.

I honestly feel bad for the guy. Had he not broken his collarbone a second time, he probably would still be in the league as a top receiver. Something happened during the time he was rehabbing that injury.

Ugh, no. The only something that *happened* during his "rehab" was Charles continuing to drink and do drugs as he did at MSU. Come on. He's not a victim. Just a dumb shit that wasted his off-the-chart WR talent.

Exactly. He fell back into the wrong crowd or something. He came to camp that year in awesome shape after rehabbing the collarbone injury the year before. From all accounts he had worked his ass off. Looked great in camp and then breaks the collarbone diving for a ball the third play of the season. The next season he comes back looking like shit and fails a drug test. He actually was a victim of the Lions' stupidity. They should have had a plate put in his collarbone after the first injury.
