I read that they do nothing more than give you that comforting placebo effect. Apparently it is a waste of money and they don't give you any benefit whatsoever. In fact, some are actually harmful.
They don't make up for any nutritional deficiencies, won't help you live longer or fight off cancer. This includes, those fatty acids supplements, calcium supplements and multivitamins, all of them.
I asked a close friend who is a family physician about this and she chuckled and said that vitamins and supplements are one of the biggest and ongoing scams ever. She says people, especially nowadays, are obsessed as ever with living longer and healthier and it's easy and very convenient to believe that popping these pills once a day can help you live longer, healthier or fight off cancers.
She went on to say that people will continue to waste money and doctors will continue to prescribe it to people who need calcium in their diets, or have other nutritional deficiencies.
I guess if it's too good to be true it usually is. You have to eat those green vegtables, get that vitamin C from orange juice and all that other stuff.
She said exercise is also extremely important if you really want to live longer and healthier and that a lot of the problems patients come in with can be solved by exercising on a regular basis but the patients aren't told that because it's not good business for the medical community and are just given a rx for some drug.
It all makes sense. What a waste of money for those that take vitamins and all that.
I'm turning 30 in a few years so I am starting to think about my health more. I don't smoke or do drugs, I very seldom drink and when I do it's just socially. I exercise. The one thing that I was wondering was about these vitamins, fatty acid supplements and all that and I see now that they are a joke so I guess that means I have to make sure I eat more leafy green vegtables and fish I suppose.
