I read that they do nothing more than give you that comforting placebo effect. Apparently it is a waste of money and they don't give you any benefit whatsoever. In fact, some are actually harmful.

They don't make up for any nutritional deficiencies, won't help you live longer or fight off cancer. This includes, those fatty acids supplements, calcium supplements and multivitamins, all of them.

I asked a close friend who is a family physician about this and she chuckled and said that vitamins and supplements are one of the biggest and ongoing scams ever. She says people, especially nowadays, are obsessed as ever with living longer and healthier and it's easy and very convenient to believe that popping these pills once a day can help you live longer, healthier or fight off cancers.

She went on to say that people will continue to waste money and doctors will continue to prescribe it to people who need calcium in their diets, or have other nutritional deficiencies.

I guess if it's too good to be true it usually is. You have to eat those green vegtables, get that vitamin C from orange juice and all that other stuff.

She said exercise is also extremely important if you really want to live longer and healthier and that a lot of the problems patients come in with can be solved by exercising on a regular basis but the patients aren't told that because it's not good business for the medical community and are just given a rx for some drug.

It all makes sense. What a waste of money for those that take vitamins and all that.

I'm turning 30 in a few years so I am starting to think about my health more. I don't smoke or do drugs, I very seldom drink and when I do it's just socially. I exercise. The one thing that I was wondering was about these vitamins, fatty acid supplements and all that and I see now that they are a joke so I guess that means I have to make sure I eat more leafy green vegtables and fish I suppose.

I don't take vitamins anymore cause I realized it was a waste.

Most scientists will tell you that you need more than just the vitamin for it to work effectively. For example vitamin C from an orange has other stuff in it that help your body absorb it properly.

Some times the vitamins will have a bunch of things together that cancel each other out.

Iron will cancel out vitamin E if taken together.

And don't ever go to GNC. I'm in the know about these things and it's funny how they try to sell you all kinds of crap that you don't need.

Saw an old man walk out of there with $400 worth of stuff because they sales person took advantage of him.

Vitamins are a scam. According to Dr. Dean Edell, there has not been a single published peer-reviewed scientific study showing any benefits from taking vitamins. However, there have been a few studies that can show vitamins causing harm in certain circumstances.

You need look no further than the massive following of astrology to conclude the average American has a scientific IQ in the single digits.
Chiropracters are a scam as well, and they are still in business.

People that believe in astrology, psychics, etc almost deserve to be ripped off.

my old man was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer, did the chemo, had part of his intestines removed, then heard about some 80 year old doctor in Higginsville, Missouri....Doctor gave him all of these natural vitamins that he had helped have created. A year later all of his labs came back normal and cancer free, his primary Doctor said he had only seen that once in 20 years.

You need vitamins, but you need to get them from real food. Fruits and vegetables. vitamins don't do shit, but I still take a multivit every day...just makes me feel good. I wouldn't spend crazy dollars on supplements though.

Well, im 35, and pretty much workout (lift weights) 3x a week. I dont eat anything all day and eat one big meal at night (i get all my calories starting after my workout. Its called the warrior diet. Some may think this is weird, but if you think about it, our ancestors did this to an extent. They didnt eat 6 meals a day like some of us do now.

Anyway, Basically, i believe the most important vitamins/supplements that one that lifts can take are the following:

multivitamin (NOWS food is a good one)
fish oil (i take minimum 10g/day)
creatine
vitamin d
vitamin e
antioxidant
calcium
digestive enzymes
fiber supplement.

thats all i can think of at the moment.

A huge salad before my main meal also.

That's interesting. One big meal a day.

I fast one day a month. No food whatsoever. It has nothing to do with religion. I just like to give my digestive system a rest. I eat so much meat and food in general(thankfully I have a high metabolism so I'm fit) that it must be a tear on my body so I give it a break.

Just remember that Doctors are not trained in Vitamins they are trained in the best Medical way to fix the problem. My daughter is in Med school and she will tell you that Med schools, especially the teaching Schools get Millions and Millions of $ from the Big Drug companys..Not the Vitamin companys, so do not ask your Doctor about vitamins because they have no clue. You need to talk to a nutritionist for that type of info.

I've been taking one multi-vitamin daily for most of my life and rarely have gotten a cold or flu over my lifetime. IMHO, eat well and supplement with a multi-vitamin that has no ingredient greater then 100% daily value and you're good to go! JMO.

I haven't had a cold or flu in over 3 years. Never get flu shots or anything. I seldom had colds or flus growing up either and I never took vitamins. Maybe you just have a strong immune system like I do.

sumday,
do you have any references showing that these supplements do provide a placebo effect? If true that would make them a huge bargain and definitely worth taking
